University Heights 59 - Shelby Valley 49 (All A semis)
#1
Valley led 38-28 at the end of the first half. For the second straight game Uha staged a furious second half comeback and won the second half 31-11. Potter for Shelby has about as pure a shot as you will see. He had 6 3’s and 22 at the half. Uha’s drew McGowan (miss state baseball signee) and Taquan hollowell smothered Potter in the second half. He had more shots blocked than hit rim in the second half only scoring 3 points on the line after being fouled on a 3 pointer

Uha’s sophmore guards william Bryan and dj quarrels applied intense pressure on Shelby valley’s guards forcing their offense out towards the half court line in the second half.

Tandy had 6 at the half and 16 in the second for 22 in the game.

Uha didn’t shoot as well as they usually do and still found a way to win.

Potter is really good. He needs to hit the weight room. If he does that he could be a d-1 prospect

Nice write up. UHA absolutely dominated the second half.

SV has got to figure out a way to get more looks for Potter with defenses keying in on him.

SV Has two issues relating to this.

A. Potter, while a decent ball handler is not very strong or quick. So when he catches, if he's not open he can't create separation for his own shot. I say this with respect. But perhaps against 15th region teams he's able to. But UHA proved with McGowan and Hollowell that if you have a decent athlete with ok size, if you're disciplined enough to keep in contact with him you can shut him down.

B. They really lack a second or 3rd scoring option. They have two nice guards but the two bigger guys with beards down low provide virtually nothing on offense other than the occasional rebound.

That's what was proven this week at the ALL a. The top 6 or 7 teams all had one really nice player. UHA had the best player and two other guys who could score as well. Their two roll players were also able to find a way to score points.

Potter needs to get in the weight room and work on his lower body quickness and speed. If he does that he's a legit mr. basketball contender in 2020

I’ve watched Valley a lot and totally agree with this assessment very much on point. Potter struggles against athletic defenders I.E Billiter from pikeville. If they don’t find ways to get him the ball maybe try posting him up? Then pikeville is likely to beat them in the 15th region tourney. Billiter is one hell of a defender. Rooting for potter to keep developing his game and get to that next level. Maybe the purest jump shot I’ve seen

He reminded me of Travis ford with is range. Every time it left Potter's hand in the first half I thought it was going in.

I agree with Blazers assessment but not the solution. While weights can
increase fast twitch fiber, fast twitch is still largely a matter of genetics.
That aside, he won't be improving his quickness anytime soon. What he
can improve is constant movement through screens (Chris Lofton) and
learning to first look for open teammates. Will/can he pass? If so,
other guys will be getting the reps needed to consistently score when
he (Potter) is not open. Thankfully, creating one's own shot is not
the only skill required for becoming a team asset.

If he's never lifted or done any kind of high level strength and conditioning he can absolutely improve his speed, quickness and strength. By looking at him it appears that he actually has the frame to add some muscle, but it also didn't look like he had ever tried.

Your assessment is correct in terms of what he can do to help his team. But he can absolutely improve himself physically and that will go a long way to helping his game.

I would not call the way Biliter plays Potter defense. Dirty possibly, a mugging probably, is he taught to play that way most definitely. The 2 young men from UHA got up in Potter's grill and made life miserably but not one time were either of them dirty. Just great defense played in the second half.

It was quite a remarkable performance. Especially by hollowell. At one point he blocked 3 straight shots from Potter.

What’s even more impressive is that he held rode to 3 points in the second half about 16 hours later.
