Football in Powell Co. has been up and down since it’s birth. Next season will present a team with a district player of the year in RB Nate Skidmore, and an experienced offensive unit all together. They’re going to be good. With that said, the next coach needs to be someone who will put in a little bit of effort in the younger stages of the game to begin developing relationships with families and future players. The talent will drop after next season but there are still talented players on the roster. There’s probably not going to be too many applicants for this job but there’s only one person who already has what it takes to win there and that’s Josh Kincaid. He was the defensive coordinator there. Has been around the program since Tony Burchett took the helm in 2009. He’s a Belfry graduate and would be perfect for the job.

This job is very intersting.

1. Its Powell Co (not a knock) it is what it is but...

2. Very very good team coming back in 2018, after that???? Now, state championship good, probably not, but Regional Championship good, quite possible.

3. How does Powell Co want to transition, another up and comer or do you do with a coach with a Head Coaching background, do you stay in house?

#1. Powell Co football could be a solid spot IF the community buys into it like they do basketball.
#2. Very good returning team/ group of Seniors but there will be a drop off in 2019. Couple that with a realignment that will take them from a district where they have a shot to win it each year to possibly 3rd each year behind Bell Co and Rockcastle Co makes this tougher.
#3. The hiring committee is going to be in a tough spot. Do they go with someone who will be there long term? That coach will need to spend as much time building for 2019 and beyond as he does this years group which may hurt them. Do they go with someone familiar to ride out a possible good season this year and recruit a good, long term young coach for next season and beyond? Is the job as appealing as a total rebuild?

Bottom line is the timing on this will hurt Powell some in 2018 regardless IMO.

Josh Kincaid deserves this job and would do a great job with this program.

Who are the potential candidates that may have applied or shown interest? With all the talk around Brewer for the past few weeks leaving I would not think Powell was caught off guard and have been in search mode behind the scenes.

You would think so, but you would be surprised. There isn't anyone who will go out and search for candidates. That doesn't happen there. They will sit back and wait for someone to show interest.

I just hope that they hire someone who is capable of leading them i mean i hate to see powell drift back to the days of being one of the worst teams in eastern Kentucky but if they dont make a smart hire it will happen Kincaid would be a good hire in my opinion he's been under both the past 2 head coaches I mean he knows the kids he is very capable in my opinion

Josh would be a fantastic hire for any school!

I won't be surprised if they don't pull the trigger until the end of the school year. It's not an ideal situation for a lot of teams, but it's not a death sentence by any means.

With funds in schools being what they are, I won't be surprised if later and later hires are much more common. Coupled with the fact that there isn't an insane amount of people who are wanting to be high school coaches.

I am speculating that the HC for 2018 is already there as an assistant.

Powell will be hiring a new Super I believe. This will impact a coach coming there not knowing who it will be until July 1.

That is also a reason I said the HC for 2018 is already there. They will hire an assistant to coach this group of seniors. May be a 1 year deal as Powell takes a hit in both the district alignment and the talent level in 2019.

any news?

I forgot this job was still open.

Is Powell planning on having interviews anytime soon? School lets out on June 8th. One would think a new coach would be named by then.

Long time assistant, Josh Kincaid has been named head coach of the Pirates. Congratulations to the Belfry Native and his family.
