Whitley Co 2013

Nice to see the numbers up. You can't play 5A football with 2A numbers.

Whitley does of course lose one of the best linebackers to ever come to Whitley County which being Boston Bryant. They also lose a few backs that made an impact in the 7-5 season last year Timon Jackson, and josh Nicholas. Only two offensive and defensive linemen that made an impact John Fulton, and Samuel Vanover. With having all of this said I still look the Colonels to come back and have a great season. They have basically all returning linemen and the two best backs they had on the team last year in being Austin Ysidro and Zach Mills. I look for the Colonels to be 7-3 or 8-2 they have the talent to go all the way to the region championship. Its all about how bad they want it. I've been told by a couple reliable sources that 10 to 15 kids on the team has been meeting up lifting weights and conditioning. This shows me the kids want to be successful very badly and will do what it takes for them to be successful. Cant wait until August 24th!

To be honest 64SUR whenever I posted on the Williamsburg 2013 thread I didn't see the North Laurel game. That was my mistake. I guess you could say I'm so use to Williamsburg's cupcake schedule that I didn't expect to see an actual game with actual competition. I do like Williamsburg obviously they have some hard working kids. For their class they a very good not good enough to beat a 5A team though. I might of predicted Williamsburg a very good season but don't swell your head up to much because they games that you win are not quality wins. I have an idea Whitley and Williamsburg switch schedules for a year and lets see how cocky the ole Williamsburg faithful is. But I do promise you 64SUR I didn't make a mistake by predicting North to beat Williamsburg on the North Laurel thread. Good Luck in the game against North I'm positive you all will show how your the best team around this area! hahahaha

That is a great schedule. I really like Coach Black and how he isn't afraid to take on all comers. With this schedule, Whitley could win 2 or 3 games and look bad on paper but be really good or they could win 6-8 games.

Based on just the names of the teams and no real knowledge, I'd guess we could see a 4-6 win regular season but be MUCH better than the record indicates. They could go into the playoffs with a 2 seed despite the record and have teams severely overlook them. It's nice to add to that win total but we all know that November is what counts. Best of luck to the Red and Black. I'm hoping for a great year down off of Exit 15.

I don't think I really have to tell you 64SUR why I would love to see Williamsburg and Whitley schedule switched once again. Hahaha I think we all the caliber teams your team plays and Whitley.

As summer practice is approaching quickly, it is time to look seriously at what I think we may see......

I think you will see some serious changes in the way the Colonels approach the game. I could see them playing a game where they are going to do all they can to get the ball in the hands of more kids and more athletes. This will be due to the fact that the Colonels will have more options, and a healthy "set" of quarterbacks.

I look for more than the obvious personal changes brought on by graduation. The defense will be faster and they will look to use that speed, along with some deceptive strength.

The schedule is challenging to say the least, made more difficult by starting out with two games on the road. But oddly enough that may be a saving grace for them as there will not be the pressure of the home crowd and the players can focus on the task at hand.

I think the district will be challenging and tougher than many expect. The key will be staying healthy but depth will not be the problem that it has been in the past.

I think the Colonels will have a successful season, but it may not be in the eyes of the fans because it may not be a sparkling record but it will prepare them well for the post season and the bottom line is that is what it all about.

If Whitley wins more than 6 games, it will be a surprise.
We will see how prepared we are when we had down to Morristown West.
Thats a very good ball team, and if we compete with that team, look out.
#40
Well if you guys play AT Morristown, keep an eye out for the po-po. They LOVE their red lights down there!!

You need to slow it down.
Driving from Harlan to Morristown is different than driving from Morristown to Lexington.

6 games might be about right. (regular season)

In all honesty, I am looking forward to this season, but the next two seasons could be very special.

Colonel fans who follow the team have known this for some time. The best thing about it, is that they are doing it with home grown kids.

The next two years will be a couple of the fastest teams to come threw.

I hope Mills will persue a 100M career in track.
I think itd be scary to see him run the 100 in a couple of years.

The Colonels need to develop that depth and play more kids if they want to consistently advance very far in the playoffs.

Whitley will always come up short with this coaching staff. Switch this staff with some very good ones and you would see the difference. They should be competing to go to BG every other year the last 3 or 4.
#51
Is Woods or Ysidro going to start at quarterback?

I cant disagree with that statement.
Id like to see a big time name walk threw the doors, but i already know who the head coach in waiting is and it will only get worse.

Ysidro has been taking first string snaps as far as i know, but Woods has been taking just as many reps. Still needs to mature on the field a little bit.

Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

2013 Football Preview: Whitley County
WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky (WYMT) - For the second straight year the Whitley County Colonels were district runner-ups to Harlan County in Class 5a District 8.

With the 2013 season just around the corner, the colonels are facing inexperience on both sides of the ball.

"Some of our younger players that had to play last year gained a lot of experience, that was a positive but we still got a lot of younger players coming up who are going to have to play this year that are untested. We're just trying to feel our way through it right now," said Coach Black.

The colonels return much of their offensive line, but only three starters are back on defense.

"All senior line, we really know it's our year our time, to step up, lost Boston, best fullback keep blocking because they're not as big and strong, but way quicker," said Senior Lineman Simon Vanderpool.

Senior Lineman Brandon Lawson agreed, "Step up and cheer guys on make them work harder, don't get on to them get better at what they're doing."

On the offensive side of the ball, the colonels have third year starting quarterback Austin Ysidro leading in the backfield.

Short term we need to focus on getting better in practice, just working hard getting used to working hard all the time. long term--win the district go pretty far if we can. past to region," said Ysidro.

Coach Black says with all the inexperience they are just taking it one game at a time.

Whitley Co. football interview

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky (WYMT) - Continuing with our high school football interviews we take you to Whitley County where the Colonels are staring down youth and inexperience on defense.

Whitley County is coming off a 7-5 season and returning only three starters on the defensive side of the ball, but the Colonels are returning their three year starting quarterback Austin Ysidro.

Head Coach Jim Black says right now the team is focusing on making improvements each week.

"Some of our younger players that had to play last year gained a lot of experience that was a positive but we still got a lot of young players coming up that are going to have to play this year that are untested so we're trying to feel our way through it right now. With the youth we have and inexperience we have we just want to make improvements each week." said Coach Black.

Ysidro does a good job at quarterback but may be more valuable as fullback in this offense.
