Well, I could talk a lot of smack here but think I'll wait to closer to game time to start the trash talk. BUT, the truth of the matter is, that video gave me chills!! I'm am so ready for football season, I can't even describe it. I've been to Belfrey 3 times to watch games; I've never been disappointed in their support of the kids who play. I think that's pretty damn awesome!!
Also, the crowd reminds me a lot of the Black Bear Nation. Trust me, we may rival each other but Harlan County empties out on Friday nights! Like your coach said in the video; there's not a light on anywhere!! LOL Every redneck from every holler is on hand to scream, yell and support the Bears!!!
Go Black Bears!!!

Forgive me for saying this NOW, but something just continues to come to my mind.
How great would it be if we could support each other in Bowling Green come state tournament time. Dear Lord!!! How many would get arrested????

Well, one thing is for sure...all the mountain teams could caravan into Bowling Green with grills and smokers and eat like kings for 2 days!! We'd have to hire a moving company to get us back home!

Have nothing but great respect for the black bear nation, but if you underestimate how many people from pond creek will show up at the game you could find yourselves out numbered. They travel and they travel loud and proud. Get ready to see the largest crowd of red you will ever see.
Best of luck to both teams!!! Play hard and leave it all on the field!!

First game in our new stadium last year, we had an estimated attendance of 8,000. Some estimates went as far as 9,000 but I personally believe 8 is more accurate.
I kid a lot on here panthernation, but the truth is Belfrey travels much as we do. I expect both sides will be similar to that Bell Co game I mentioned earlier. During that first game, you couldn't hear the person next to you even if they were shouting. The ground literally shook from the reverberations of all the noise. I couldn't hear normally for a month!!
One time when we were playing at Letcher, we had a police escort to the county line. Then it was horns and screams all the way to their stadium. Most of us blew out our car horns, then we used air horns til we got there.
This is what I expect from Belfry. This is what I expect from Harlan County.
I cannot wait!!

I bet 12000 belfry doesn't travel better than Bell. However they might leave earlier...lol. Just kidding Pirate nation:igiveup:

When Belfry came to Whitley a few years ago, id say they had around 300-400 in the stands.

Well a lot of the Bell fans left early. That both surprised and disappointed me!! I certainly gained a lot of respect for the few who stayed, and gathered around their team after the game.

As good as Belfry travels I think it is unrealistic to expect them to bring a massive contingent. I think it is wayyyy too optimistic to think Belfry will fill their side and highly doubtful they bring as many fans as Bell County last year.
It is simple logistics. Though this will be perhaps the two best teams in EKY and a highly acclaimed game, it is still a regular season game requiring an extensive drive on a Friday night when people have to work. Bell County and Harlan are natural rivals and geographic rivals who played in a Historic Game (opening of the Stadium) which also came at the end of the Season when both teams had State Title aspirations. In the grand scheme of things this game is meaningless aside from the obvious bragging rights.
Belfry will certainly travel very well and bring a very large gate to the game.. but I seriously doubt you see more than 1200-1500 fans from Belfry maximum. You will see exponentially more fans than that which will travel to Southwestern, FWIW.
If this were a playoff game or the season opener I would anticipate maybe twice that estimate.. maybe even 3X.

4 more weeks and we'll be tailgating and cheering on the Black Bears.
I think the Pond Creek Nation will really be impressed with our atmosphere. We have tradition from the "old schools" and a few years of tradition with Black Bear Nation Belfry has years of tradition but Harlan County has established a special place to play a game in just 5 games!
I can't wait!

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer but I am concerned about this years team. I feel that this is by far the most athletic team that Harlan County has had. I am worried about some of our stars. For those of you that know what I am talking about you will understand. I just worry about the commitment of some of our most athletic players and can we or should I say the coaches be able to count on them when times get tough. Just a BIG concern I have.

I agree I know all to well what you are talking about! I know for sure that anytime one of our big stars shows up to anything it's a plus but wouldn't supprise me at all if he becomes a no show! There is some in this world that you can not just help! I no some of them are missing practice or just showing up when they want hope this stuff stops! Anyway can't wait until Aug 24th black bear nation will RISE! Who has it better than Us? NOBODY

Don't worry he will be their when it counts. Down time has always been tough on that kid. When he has too much free time he struggles. Once school and football get back going he will be around and I am sure everyone including the coaches will be right back on his side. All shortcomings will be forgiven b/c he can play!

I understand that the kid is a good ball player but is it fair to all the other ones that have been there day and day out for this one to just come when he wants and nothing is said or done??? I don't have a dog in this but sounds like a little favoritism to me!!

I think this is getting a little blowed up, I don't think their is a kid on this team that can do whatever he wants. If they miss I am sure they have make up work to do.

What id give to be 16 and playing football again.
Would only want to do it without the whole school thing though.
Can you imagine how good these teams would be without having to go to school? nicker:

I would look for the HC/KC scrimmage to be JV more than varsity with the teams playing early in the year.
08-01-2013, 09:53 AM
This would be a first for me. Teams scrimmaging then playing in the regular season. Just don't see that happen to much anymore or even if at all. But I would agree with Tomcat look for a lot of Jv in this one..
08-01-2013, 01:23 PM
^
Surely that wont be the case
why would two teams scrimmage then play in the regular season.
Doesnt Bell and Clay still play as well?
Seems the SEKC needs some fixing.
