I'm not sure about everyone in the 14th but I know Owsley, Wolfe, Estill, Jackson City, Riverside Christian, and Cordia have never been. I'm not sure about Jenkins.
Estill has only been in the 14th since 2006. I don't know if they won the 11th or 10th when they were members of those regions but I have a feeling they probably didn't.

I think you've confused Pleasure Ridge Park with someone else in the 6th Region. They've won the state championship before.

However, Cawood, the largest of the schools consolidating into Harlan Co High never won a regional title. Cawood went to the finals several times and a few times I thought they had the best talent in the region. To me it's amazing Cawood never won a regional title with Nick Sanford.

Sanford was the greatest player I've covered but Cawood lost a heartbreaker to Clay in the finals that year (1986).
The region was absolutely loaded then though, which I know you remember.
Clay was state runner-up in 1985 and Cumberland was just as good with Lewis Morris, Paul Gaffney, Richard Washington etc. Harlan had Jeff Miller and Rodrick Robinson and company, Middlesboro had Lawrence Buell and Knox Central was also very talented.

When Johnson Central was established in 1968.... Meade Memorial, Flat Gap, Van Lear and Oil Springs were the schools that consolidated to make JC.
Of those 4 schools, to my knowledge, only Meade Memorial made it to the state tournament 3 times..... 1958, 1960, 1968.
Some you older BGR members might remember the coaches name, Wendell Wallen. He was Meade Memorial's coach. He also coached JC to the 1972 and 1975 15th regional championships.

One thing I love about the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center during regional tournament time....
They have a banner of every former and current 15th region school hanging in the rafters.

I think youd be surprised at how much that list would grow if you added teams that have only made it one time or none.

I was surprised to see Jenkins never going to the State Tournament. Jenkins has been around over 100 years.

Oh yes. In the mid to late 80s through the mid 90s the 13th region was one of the better regions in the state. Knox Central had two years that they were in the top 10 in the state. Both of those KC teams never made it out of the district. One year Barbourville upset them in the opening game of the district. The next year Corbin beat them the opening game of the district. Clay Co and Ballard had the top programs in the state from 85-90. In 94, both Harlan and Corbin were ranked #1 in the state at different points in the season. There is absolutely no comparison in the quality of basketball in the 13th region now compared with 85-95.

I'd love to see the 13th get back to that prestige it had from 85-95.
The biggest reason it has fallen off so much is the Keiths, and Hicks, are no longer around. There was great coaching quality during that time in the 13th. Even Whitley had Prewitt, arguably the best coach Whitleys ever had, and actually won a lot of games and had some of the better teams, but after he left to be principal, its been all down hill since.
That was a great time for basketball around here. That kind of basketball would embarrass the transfer teams of the 14th and 15th regions of today.
03-03-2013, 10:43 PM
I agree, during the mid 80's the 13th was as good as any region in the state. That Cumberland team was one of the most talented teams player for player ever in the 13th. I went to watch them once just to see them all dunk in warm-ups. They lost to of course the Tigers.
