The Trinity High School basketball team finally got tested by an opponent from Louisville on Saturday night, but in the end the Shamrocks showed there might not be a better squad in the city — or state — this season.
Nathan Dieudonne had a big second half and Darryl Hicks earned L.J. “Butch” Charmoli MVP honors as the Shamrocks beat Moore 74-57 to win the Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.
Trinity (15-2), No. 1 in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, won its four LIT games by an average of 27.5 points. The final was the closest.
“We just solidified our No. 1 ranking and let everyone know that we’re serious,” said Hicks, who scored 12 points. “It means a lot to prove it in Louisville and let everybody know how hard we work in practice.”

Dieudonne was 6 for 6 from the field, scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and added nine rebounds. James Quick also scored 15.
William Bryant (21 points, eight rebounds) and Daquan Boyd (16 points) led No. 7 Moore (16-4), which was in the LIT final for the first time since beating Owensboro for the 1980 championship.
The Mustangs led by seven in the first half before settling for a 30-29 halftime lead.
“I really don’t think we ran out of gas,” Moore coach Shedrick Jones said. “I think (the Shamrocks) did a better job (in the second half). … They’re No. 1 for a reason. They don’t beat themselves. They were just the better team tonight.”
The Shamrocks shot 44 percent in the first half, but 14 of their 25 shots came from 3-point range as they seldom attacked the Mustangs’ 2-3 zone.
“(Coach Mike Szabo) really wanted us to drive in the gaps and get kickouts (for threes) or get it in to (Dieudonne),” Hicks said of the halftime adjustments. “Really, no one can stop Nate from scoring. We just had to get him the ball.”
Bryant’s basket gave Moore a 35-33 lead with 6:12 left in the third quarter before Trinity took control with a 16-5 run. Seven Shamrocks scored during the surge, with Troy Saxton’s 3-point play making it 49-40 at the 1:01 mark.
