Gambling
#1
Do you support it or are you against it? It's great for the economy. Lowers taxes, brings in around $550 billion a year. But it also produces gambling addicts, which equal the amount of all of the heroin and cocaine addicts in the U.S.
#2
I support it, mainly because it will mean good things for the economy.
#3
I do not support gambling. However, I would be willing if the government didn't control it so strictly. I'm either for getting rid of it all, including the lottery, or allowing it all. If casino's come, I still can't raffle my house off. LOL Boortz makes the point about the monopoly the government has on gambling, and how they control strictly the private gambling in casinos and horse tracks. He makes the point... why can't I take a $100,000 home, and sell $2000 tickets for $100.... I make $100,000 profit, someone gets a house for $100. Its a win-win.

The only thing I hate worse than absolute government control... its selective government control.

Living in Eastern Kentucky I'll say one thing: Id rather see the lines trying to get inside the Casinos rather tha the pharmacies. Believe that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, "ain't that the truth"... Ever worked at a Bingo Hall to raise money for some charity organization? Why do more people play Bingo at the first of the month? Why are more pull tabs sold? Fixed incomes. Gambling addiction. We are "taught" all our lives that "the good life" means things, means possessions. Poor kids know these messages just as others. The desire for "the good life" preys particularly on the poor, as they chase the rainbow playing the lottery, playing bingo. We have a Greed with which we have agreed.

I think if we go with the casino route, I would rather see them built in Eastern Ky and possibly another part of the state that needs economic help. I just dont like the idea of putting them on the opposite side of the river from the ones in Indiana and OH. They built casinos in Tunica MS and it totally changed the lives of the people living there for the better. The average income went to something like $30K in the area. Tunica had been referred to as the "Ethiopia of the US" until then.

IMO, the only cities in eastern Kentucky that stand a chance in having a casino is Hazard, Pikeville, or Ashland.
#8
if they was to build a casino in eastern ky there would be more drug heads prostitutes and stuff like that.

I've not decided if I'm for Casino gambling or not, proponents of casinos claim that Kentucky can recieve as much as 500 million dollars a year in tax revenues, then opponents claim that for Kentucky to recieve 500 millions per year these casinos would have to take in around 1.5 billion dollars per year. My question is with Kentucky being one of the poorest states in the U.S. where would the 1.5 Billion come from? Would it take away from the lottery, which by the way was supposed to be the savior of the education system when it was started years ago.

Is Kentucky's financial situtation really as bad as Governor Breshear claims or is he just trying to scare everyone to that they will vote for the casinos?

I am conflicted by this.... I mean, I guess I support it, cause I am always losing at it. But I am against it, because I would have more money if it never existed???
But, I can't get even if I quit!

I guess I will keep on supporting it!

Why not?? It isn't anymore of an addiction than drugs and E KY has plenty of that. Not to mention the Simulcasting and the Bingo Halls. I can promise that it won't make us (at least in E KY) any better off though. lol

And yes, as long as Frankfort keeps wasting money we will always have a financial crisis.

This whole issue will prove to be one of the biggest graft deals in the history of the Commonwealth... and that's sayin' somthin'. The new Gov said in the beginning he wanted "the pipples" to decide this issue.... watch and see... as soon as "the pipples" elected him.. now he's wantin' some "legislator" to settle this issue... lOL... along with where they are located... yeah right... nothin new here... just a different cast of characters.

Why would people not be for it? It's just like the wet-dry vote, all it is going to do is bring in more money for everyone. They think that by keeping it out people won't do it. Wake up, If they want to do it, lets make some money off of it. Hopefully, if they do it the money will go to where it needs to be, with the schools.
#16
I support it. If the money is used right it should help horse racing and bring money in for the state to use toward taxes, health care and many other good things.

This would be a more serious problem than drugs in Eastern Kentucky. They would have to put it at ThunderRidge, in Prestonsburg. You would have to chain everything down at your home. People will be standing in a line to get in at the first of the month, then steal everything in the middle to the end of the month to go play.

This is what the oppenents of casnio gambling are saying.

The 1.5 billion dollars that is projected to be spent in casnios means that on average each person in Kentucky would spend about $350 each year based on Kentucky's population of 4 million people. If taxes were raised by $350 the State of Kentucky would recieve all 1.5 Billion instead of 500 million.

In 1987 then Gov. Wilkerson said the revenues from the lottery would be used to fix the education system and keep us from raising taxes, then within a year Kentuckians recieved the largest tax increase in Kentucky history. So even if the State does recieve 500 Million each year their's still no guarantee that taxes will not be raised in the near future.

Let me ask everyone this, if the casnio were to built and the people of Kentucky were to spend 1.5 Billion dollars each year where do you think the money come from, I know that most people don't have a lot of extra money that they can throw away in these casnios. I find it hard to believe that there is 1.5 Billion new dollars just laying out there, the casnios may reach their goal of 1.5 Billion but I think it is a trade off, I think most would use monies to gamble that would normally be used in local business that helps keep the local economies going.

People are spending the money now... just in other states.

Are you talking about casnio gambling? Isn't Indiana the only border state that has casnio gambling. The HL had an article about casnio gambling taking away from the lottery which would take away from the KEES monies and will keep some kids from attending College and make it harder for others to attend.

West Virginia has slots and table games at their race tracks also. The money from the gambling can be used toward education as well.

These quotes come from the article link posted above...

""If expanded gaming revenue estimates are correct, it wouldn't take a significant amount to create a safety net for the college scholarship and grant programs," Gleason said."

"it rebounded. The tracks have since become some of the biggest retail sellers of lottery tickets, said Libby White, marketing director for the West Virginia Lottery."

"We've been hearing that funds would be dedicated to higher education," said KHEAA's Ellis. "There's always more need out there."

"There might be even more. A proposal in the General Assembly, House Bill 12, would double the amounts of the KEES scholarships"

You have to take into account the out of state gamblers and the tourism industry which would be helped by this. All of the 1.5 million would not be coming from KY residents, or at least it shouldn't be. Casinos attract tourists if done correctly. EKY's tourism commissions need to get off their behinds if this passes and get some tourism to actually come to EKY and Kentucky as a whole. If done right, we could get all of the 1.5 million from out of state residents and make more off of the tourism industry. Then if the State government spent the money wisely, we might not have such a financial crisis in KY.. But it will never happen that way and EKY will see the least of whatever it brings in.

I agree... a lot of out of state money would come in to KY... think about how many people aren't from KY that come to watch and wager on the KY Derby... they would also spend their money on casino gambling. Casinos would also bring a lot more jobs to many areas as well.

The only comments I've read from the casino's groups is that we could recieve 500 million per year. I would really like to see how the money would be divided, who gets what, things like scholarships, KEES and the education system would be great.

Indiana and Ohio is going crazy since KY is about ready to pass this. They are getting so scared because they will lose so much money from people in KY. They did a big article on it up here in Louisville. I cant wait for KY to get casinos.

Buddy whatever, I would rather have a casino any day than bars. Bar and Stripclubs help with those things that you said. How can playing poker, bring out prostitutes? There is not 1 prostitute in New Albany, IND.

You do know that alcohol is sold in casino's don't you?Smile And do you know for a fact that "there is not 1 prostitute in New Albany, Ind."?Rolleyes Smile I'm not taking either side, but your response seemed well, not very well thought out. To answer your ? about how playing poker can bring out prostitutes, well Casino's bring in money, it only makes sense for a prostitute to be around a place where money is. That's just good buisness. If I was a pimp, Big Grin that's where my girls would work. Hit on the lucky guy that just won a bundle.
