who is or has been the best coach in the 58th district...in my opinion it would have to be Henry Webb @ SF

There have been some good ones, but in my life time I'd go with Johnny Martin.

yea it would be close between those 2....hey blackcat send me a PM i need to ask you a question

I dont know how you could say definitely. Henry Webb coached 5 yrs. or so and had over 100 wins, 4 dist. titles, 4 conf. titles, All A title, Region title, and wymt title.

While Henry Webb was coaching, who was better?

I think it depends on how you judge a coach. Does longevity matter more? or who had the best run? If you stay at a program for years on in, you have to build and rebuild constantly. There are some pretty bad years in-between success. However, if you only stay in coaching for a limited number of years it's usually boom or bust. I think both Martin & Webb are outstanding coaches.

Johnny Martin for sure. He has had a lot of great seasons and bad seasons and any other coach would take their ball and go home after some of the turmoil he has went through at Allen Central, but he has stayed there this long through it all and has grown through all the adversity. He is by far the best coach in the 58th.

I would go with coach webb on this one

I love Johny Martin...He's an awesome teacher! lol.....Martin Imo.

Henry webb for sure

You guys have to look at the talent Webb had over those years.

Still he was the coach

True, but Johnny Martin proved to me last year he was the best coach. Why? Good question. His 05-06 teams record was 5-22, the next year with the same group of boys went 23-8 and won the district championship.

Not meaning anything bad about Henry, but he got in coaching when the talent level was up, got out when it started to go down. He was the coach at the right time. My vote for the best coach in the 58th goes to Coach Martin.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

People, if we are talking about the all-time greatest coach in the 58th district, then there are many more names that need to be included besides Johnny Martin & Henry Webb (& they both would tell you that!).
Gene Frasure - won 2 regional titles with Maytown 67 & 69, one 3rd place state tournament finish.
Pete Grisbey - won 3 regional titles with McDowell 66, 71, & 73, if not should be KHSAA hall of famer
Hoss Halbert - 1 regional title 65, & over 500 wins for a career, KHSAA hall of famer
John Campbell - Wayland, ? regional titles, but for sure a regional titile in 56, 3rd place state tournament, KHSAA hall of famer
Tommy Boyd - 1 regional title with Wayland 64
Jr. Newsome - Two regional titles with BL, 76 & 80
& I have no clue how many districts any of them won!

Wheelwright had a fella named Don Wallen that was an excellent coach. I believe he moved to Florida and won a few state championships. Johnny Martin would be my overall choice because of the energy and knowledge he takes into a season. He has been there a long time and deserves to be mentioned anytime these little discussions come up. I could not imagine a coach that can take on so many seasons and summers and after all those years still have a passion for coaching. I think he still has some good years left in him.

Don Wallen was awesome!

I'll go with Johnny Martin also.

I believe Hoss Halbert is the greatest coach in the 58th because of all the wins. Coming in close behind is Johnny Martin.

i would have to agree jonny martin as always had good teams and hardly no one plays harder but when it comes down to districts and tourny's they always choke, jonny martin has only had 1 regionb title in ow ever long he has been coaching and webb had 1 in 5 years
