Is 2022 Pikeville in this Conversation? Lost by like 5 Points to that State Champion GRC Team. Won All A State

I feel like yes but a lot of teams during this timeframe got discounted due to Covid years which stinks because it was across the board, but just how it worked out.

South Floyd had some dandy teams from 2000-2003 as did Shelby Valley.

15th has produced some great teams the last 20-25 years.

Shelby Valley in 2010 obviously would be considered the best, just from the incredible run they went on winning a State Championship.
Paintsville in 2008 comes to mind also, a team that had so many lofty expectations their whole careers, finally getting to the mountain top and winning a game at the State Tournament.
Someone mentioned the Betsy Layne team from 2011, that was a great team and even tho they didn't win the Region, they did win the ALL A State Tournament that year, and gave Shelby Valley all they could handle in the Regional Championship in 2010.

I know this was a "top 5" list but those are the 3 that stick out the most to me, those South Floyd teams with Mikey Hall & Rusty Tackett were really good like previously mentioned, Raider Ball was something to see in those days. Allen Central had some great teams around that same time also, still to this day the greatest game I've ever seen was the 2001 Regional Championship at Shelby Valley, South Floyd beat Allen Central 62-58. SF beat AC by 29 points just a week prior in the District Championship. Then Allen Central went on an improbable run to beat Valley & Paintsville to get to the Championship. The atmosphere for that game was electric, all of left & right beaver was at Valley that night, some great memories.

One of the reasons I put Betsy Layne 2011 on my list was for the fact they played Shelby Valley very close in the Region Title game. I think it was the only single digit victory Shelby Valley had that entire postseason.

Speaking of Allen Central's early 00s teams, Shawn Newsome was a force. One of the better players I've seen play.

You are correct about the BL-Valley Championship. I called that game for one of our local radio stations. Closest anyone got to them scoring margin wise from district all the way through state, final score was 69-61. As good as Valley was, and everyone pretty much expected them to cakewalk through Region, BL gave them everything they wanted and then some, it was one of those moments where everyone in the gym was cheering for Betsy Layne, even the non-BL fans. That's what makes (or made) basketball so special in this area, always root for the underdog or the unexpected.

2015/2016 Lawrence county group was really good.

They Gave doss all they wanted in first round who made finals.

One of the few teams athletically who was able to compete with other teams across state.

Daltons were freak athletes, along with a really good point guard in Chaffins. Kiser and Richardson were good shooters who you couldn’t help off of and allowed Timmy and Robert to create.

Needed little more depth, but that team 1-5 was as good as any.
