You can’t change in the middle of the assignment period other than to drop out of district play. The enrollment number pre-Covid were used for the most recent and current classification. The next one is coming in 2025. So No….they didn’t “play up”. They played where there we assigned based on 2020 enrollment. Move on.
Well that's false, 2023 was a fresh alignment, the Board of Control voted to bring the 2025 alignment early and yes Belfry was classified as 2a .... https://khsaa.org/football/realignment/2...lments.pdf
and here is where they requested to play in 3a https://khsaa.org/2023-football-realignm...oundaries/
Carry on.

Not necessarily. You can appeal to play up or down, if the KHSAA buys what you're selling its not uncommon to allow a school to play out of classification. Most of the time the arguments deal with logistics and cost of transportation. Some schools at the bottom of the enrollment in their class have appealed to play down a class if they feel like their current enrollment is drastic from their enrollment was at the beginning of the 3-4 year assessment. I can't think of an appeal off of the top of my head that was accepted to play lower, but I know they do get submitted and it's released to the public by the KHSAA.

The KHSAA has removed the option to play up in class. Teams must now play in the classification based on their enrollment. There's no appeal process, teams are locked into their respective class.

Lawrence Co. would fit district 6 in 3a in my opinion with less driving.
