Don't know what video everybody's watching but it's clearly out of his hand before the buzzer sounds.

The time keeper is an old veteran and honest as the day is long. He started the clock when the official lowered his arm. As a clock keeper you don't watch anything but the refs arm. That's the rule. Don't blame the clock keeper. And hitter you need to watch the replays again my friend of the cordia shot. He shot the ball with 4 seconds on the clock.

im watching it right now and I was at the game. you must be watching the video that has the time on the bottom of the screen and its different. ill try to get my buudy to send me his video of the actual clock and it read between .2 and .3 left on the clock when the ball came out of the net. the refs had access to replay, why not use it?
01-05-2017, 06:11 AM
High school refs can't look at replay.
01-05-2017, 06:23 AM
If this was a college game clearly the refs would have reviewed the shot and overturned it, but it's high school and they can't do so. Anybody who watches the live shot knows it's a bang-bang play and half will watch it and say it's good and half will watch and say it's in his hands. Either way it's an awesome shot, but video does show it's in his hands.
And also how do you make the steps, dribble, and a shot in 1 second? I think that's why their is some heat towards the time keeper, clock may or may not have been started late.
But hey another great game in the great Mountain Classic!

Hitter I am watching the clock at the bottom. At the game I actually thought it was close that the horn sounded as it went through the net also.

Congrats HC. That was a great shot

It was a great shot.
High school sports are not permitted to use any type of replay. That doesn't mean the refs can't watch it after the fact, but there is nothing they can do about it. They can't change the result of the shot, look to see if he got the shot off in time or add/remove time from the clock. The refs and KHSAA can watch as spectators.

The video from under the basket on twitter in slow motion, is the one I saw and they have a light that is in line with the buzzer. NO BASKET. CLEARLY not out of his hand. With that said, I am sure it was a difficult call live. Glad Bears beat Cordia. Just because you are a fan or coach should not impair your vision. It is what it is game over, but please stop trying to convince me I did not see time run out with the ball in his hands.

Should of definitely had just a couple tenths if that on the clock, which then makes for an alley oop attempt only, no catch and shoot would of been possible! It was obvious that the Red light was definitely on when shot was released, so they missed two crucial calls in a row. Guess that is why these Letcher county boys ref in the 15th and not the 14th. :lmao:

Should of been on the NOT TOP 10, shouldn't of counted!

ok. the clock at the bottom of the screen was obviously a little slow. and I didn't think that the refs could either but the guy sitting next to me which was over the refs said that if it was like a tv station then the refs could review. I know the refs can review fights and things of that nature but I don't know about the last second shot.
at the game it was clearly late, they tell the refs that all he can do is take a quick dribble then shoot at most. he caught the ball and had to turn half way around then took a dribble and a step so the ref should have started waiving off the shot before he started in his shooting motion

Light was on and still in the players hands
Hard to call or see in live action
I watched on TV and when watching live, I said no basket and after watching replay, still no basket. Heck of a shot tho

Great shot, but no way you can do that much dribbling and get a shot off in one second.
01-05-2017, 05:39 PM
That much dribbling??? He took ONE dribble!!!
01-05-2017, 05:43 PM
What's amazing about some of the comments in this thread is whether the shot was good or not it still should have counted because it was an awesome shot. Lol. That makes no sense. If it's late leaving his hand then the shot shouldn't have counted. To count it is unfair to the other team, plain and simple.
I wasnt at the game but by reading through this thread it sounds like the clock keeper was as much to blame as the referees, if he indeed didn't start the clock when it should have been started.

A great shot by a real player, but, sadly, I thought it was late. Harlan County is a nice team but they are living a charmed life!

The fact that we have replay allows us as fans to go and complain about the officiating. Fact remains it was a bang bang play, and during these situations the refs don't always make the correct call. College officials miss just as may calls and high school officials. Now I am a Cordia fan and graduate, and Cordia should have won the game cause the shot was in his hands when the lights on the backboard glowed. In these situations you always want to be on the winning side, being realistic here you are gonna be on the wrong side of the officiating at times. Literally every team in that tourney has experienced a missed call.
Give Harlan Co all the credit in the world cause he did make an amazing shot. And I don't know names, but the PG #4 for the Bears is one hell of a ball player. If he was taller D-1 would be a huge possibility.
Cordia has never won a game in the WYMT tourney, and for there first win to get taken from them due to a missed call is what hurts. Come back with a vengeance Lions!

I have saw a few different comments that maybe the clock keeper was at fault. That is foolish. For people who have never ran a game clock here are the rules that the official will tell you in a close game like this. Do not watch the players or the ball. Watch my arm. When I drop my arm start the clock. Even though a player only has 1.1 seconds to catch the ball and shoot I assure you he has more time than that. I will explain. The clock keeper is watching the refs arm to start the clock okay. When the ref lowers his arm that takes a fraction of a second after the player caught the ball for him to drop his arm. Them it takes a fraction of a second or a second for the clock keeper to turn on the clock. It's common sense that reaction time actually gives you more time. So please don't question a fine gentleman who has ran the clock for 40 years.

Very good point on the reaction time paparazzi. You could actually add over a half second to the time that was on the clock. I think the average reaction time is around 0.3-0.4 seconds for individuals. If you can remember the old drivers manuals book you studied for your license, they always stated how many feet or car lengths should be between cars at what miles per hour. This was a way of taking into account average reaction times for drivers so you wouldn't rear end the car in front of you.
So, if the referee takes 0.3 s to react to the player catching the ball, then the clock person sees the ref drop his arm and reacts by turning the clock on, that's another 0.3 s. So, now you have 0.6 s (at least) added to what was on the clock (1.1 s) for a total time of 1.7 seconds. This changes the time to get off the shot greatly.
I looked at the shot on replay from behind the shooter that showed the light on the backboard and when he caught and then released the shot. I used a stopwatch and timed it several times. The average time was right at 1.2 seconds. It appears the shot should not have counted BUT the final call was the referees decision......it was a bang-bang play....and I would have probably called it good too. In baseball the tie goes to the runner on a play at the bag. I guess everyone needs to remember that there is no instant replay.
Also, I thought Cordia handled the situation afterwards with class and dignity.

I thought it was a great ball game between two very good teams on a big stage. Both teams competed with everything they had. Plus it finished with both teams making unbelievable huge shots. Cordia will be fine. Definitely the odds on favorite to win the all A again in my opinion. Tremendous team. Harlan County is chasing destiny right now. The teamwork and coaching they have makes them the favorite in a tough 13th region. I say let's celebrate both teams and wish them well as they continue on.
