Ashland plays for seventh place against winless Lexington Dunbar tomorrow afternoon. The two have a combined record of 0-16. If it means anything, Dunbar loses by a good bit less than does Ashland.

I will take Dunbar to win !!!!!

Although Ashland hasn't been a factor for over a dozen years, the fall this year is drastic. I think it is clearly because their sources of talent through "transfers" has dried up. I could go into more detail on what I mean by "sources of talent" but there is no need to make any harsh statements- even if true.

Ashland has some staunch supporters in this forum. They have been strangely, but predictably, quiet since basketball season started. I would like to invite them to tell us why, in their opinion, the "heralded tradition" is in a prolonged and unparallelled downfall and what can be done to turn the tide.

It looks like the Ashland newspaper has also disappeared in regard to Ashland's basketball team. A couple of weeks ago when Ashland lost to DuPont Manual by 50 points, the game was never mentioned in the Ashland newspaper. Now, the same is true in regard to a 46 point loss to Male. And this was a Saturday afternoon game.

Maybe there is a belief that, if such blowouts are not mentioned, they didn't really happen. It reminds one of the emperor and his new clothes.

End of first quarter:

Lexington Dunbar 32
Ashland 6

Dunbar may win its first game of the year to go to 1-8.

What in the world has happened to Ashland? They use to be a power for years....

Not much coming up in the elementary league from what I have seen the past few years and not totally sure of the coaching that they are receiving at that level either. Instead of teaching them several plays they should be hammering the fundamentals in them so when they get to middle school they have that down solid and can start learning more sophisticated plays. But honestly from what I have seen the last few years, not a lot of athletic ability at all, just a couple of kids looked like they had some decent potential. And honestly, the next few years don't look any better so I think Boyd is in a great spot for a while.

In most successful programs, the high school coach has some control over the teams that feed the high school including elementary school teams. If you look at the Ashland high school team from the last few years, it is obvious that the only fundamentally sound kids are the "transfers" to Ashland from other schools- mainly Rose Hill. Say what you will about "methods" and alleged "clandestine activities" but the Rose Hill kids were taught and knew fundamentals. They routinely beat Ashland's middle school teams by 30, 40, or more points. But, those days are over so Ashland must develop its own players and it isn't working so far.

Merry Christmas to all, even Mayfield

Is the overall talent level down at Ashland? I can remember when they was loaded almost every season.

They are playing without any "transfers" in their starting lineup for the first time in a number of years. The usual sources of their "transfers" have empty cupboards. Therefore Ashland must, for the most part, go with homegrown players and the crop is weak.

Since Ashland hasn't won the region in over 12 years, your memory of loaded teams shows that you have a good long term memory. But, most will agree that the 1961 team was loaded.

Probably true, but the Rose Hill players were predominately transfers to begin with. Rose Hill didnt recruit kids who were not already somewhat inclined to the small details of the game.

True. But the transfers/recruits to Rose Hill didn't learn fundamentals in the Ashland elementary system. They learned them at Rose Hill and on AAU teams coached by Rose Hill coaches. As for transfer vs. recruits, both Rose Hill and Ashland did much of the latter. Kids don't just "transfer" from one area school to another by chance. And, both enjoyed "matriculations" from other places like Huntington.

I didnt say anyone recruited. As a matter of fact I said "didnt recruit....." I didnt mean to step on toes. It seems that you have some axe you are trying to bury.

You misinterpreted my post. You didn't step on toes at all and I have nothing to bury.

While you are not saying anyone recruited, I am saying that both, as well as others, did and do recruit. I won't mention any specific examples but followers of region school shouldn't need examples. It is just a fact in high school sports- in the 16th Region and elsewhere. Some are better at retaining "plausible deniability" than are others but all participate. The KHSAA can't and won't punish everyone so it picks and chooses.

In the end, we all root for our favorites measuring success in the end by wins and losses. As one famous coach once said, "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."

I do not know how much truth there is to this rumor. I have been told by reliable sources that Kidwell is more than likely done at Russell after this year and Biggs is considering applying since he will be done as well.

Great post Patch. You are 100% correct with your assessment.
