[INDENT]Clark gets defensive to reach finals

ASHLAND — With a trip to the Ashland Invitational Tournament championship game on the line, Clark County and Warren Central proved to be a battle of the defenses.

Each team used defense to try and set the pace. Clark County was held to only 24 field goal attempts while Warren Central only shot 36 percent from the field.

Early in the game Warren Central held Clark County star Bopper Stenzel to only four first-half points. Stenzel would push through and finished with 15 points, nine coming from the free throw line.

Stenzel was a key to the Warren Central defense, facing double-teams and constant pressure, and even took a hard fall to the floor that caused an ankle injury in the third quarter.

The senior guard would come back in at the next whistle but Humphrey wasn’t surprised.

“It has to be broke for him to leave that court,” Humphrey said. “He sees that every game, but he never backs down. There are nights when it doesn’t come easy for him, but you know he’s going to fight and battle and claw his way back.”

While Stenzel was facing most of Warren Central’s pressure, forward Charlie Rogers was able to carry the load. Rogers finished with 10 points and eight rebounds while going 8-of-10 from the free throw line after forcing fouls because of his big frame driving to the lane.

Clark County has a chance to win its fourth AIT title tonight when they take on Rowan County at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals won the title back in 1957, 1968 and 2007.

Rowan County is making its first appearance in the AIT finals.

Clark County won last week’s Fort Harrod Classic and hopes to add the AIT jewel to the crown. Humphrey said it builds confidence for March.
