Nky players to watch ...
#1
This time of year, without fail, whenever I go to a football practice, the coach has guy for me to see. Look at this guy. Wait'll you see this guy. This here, this is the guy.

It's usually a kid who sprouted up in the offseason or got aggressive in the weightroom. Maybe it's a transfer or a freshman. To the coach, he's a new toy. To me, it's just a kid I'll keep my eye on. Basically, he's a player on the cusp of being a big factor.

Here's a short list of such guys, feel free to add your own.

Anthony Boden, Conner
The senior has moved from wideout to tight end after gaining some offseason weight-room muscle. At an athletic 6-2 and 205 pounds, he passes the eyeball test. And in the Cougars' spread offense, he could put up some very strong numbers.

Jacob Maus, Beechwood
Beechwood coach Noel Rash is gushing about the senior tight end and free safety. That's good enough for me.

Jordan Oppenheimer, Boone County
As a sophomore, playing back-up to Charles Quainoo, he typically got carries late in blowouts. But when he did, he looked very solid. Even though Quainoo is back, look for Oppenheimer to be more involved in the offense.

Joe Franzen, Campbell County
Good name (the Franzens consistently supply the Camels with quality athletes), good frame (6-4, 195). And the tight end and defensive end is just a junior.

John Drennan, Highlands
After transferring into Fort Thomas last season, the senior gives the Bluebirds yet another pass-catching threat and the luxury to move Austin Collinsworth to running back.

Damian Oden, Holmes
The junior is a playmaker on offense and a sure tackler on defense. And he should have a big 2009.

I agree 100% with Ryan on Damian Oden. That kid is going to be one of the top athlete's in NKy this year and I think he will surprise some people.

Holmes should have a fun year ahead. The combined record of the teams in their new district last year was 13-27. The team that won the district was 5-5. The Bulldogs will immediately be contenders to win their district and possibly make some noise in the playoffs in a weak NKy 4a.
