Mr. Basketball
#91
Anyone know the last time a private school player won Mr. Basketball???

Mike Silliman, Trinity 1962, he went on to play for Army, the New York Knicks and the 1968 Olympic Team.

It just doesnt happen, the public school coaches who vote turn a blind eye to private school talent, been like that for years. Every coach in the 13-16 regions will vote for Justice, they always support their own when the time comes.

They other kids out there are gathered at the same schools, 3 at Scott Co, 2 at Holmes, you do have Polson, but I don't think there is enough pull in the 12th region to get Polson the votes to win.

Elisha Justice WILL be the 2010 Mr. Basketball for the state of Kentucky.

I think if Justice wins Mr. Basketball then Pitino should reward him with a scholarship!

He definitely deserves more than a walk on if he gets Mr. Basketball!

I have to agree, like I said before the state tourney started that Sewell was probably the frontrunner but if SV made it til Sat. morning and Elisha played like he has all year I thought he would take the lead. Not only did the make it to Sat. morning but they brought the hardware back to SV and I'm pretty sure that EJ's play at RUPP didn't disappoint anyone who was there to watch. With that being said, not only with his play at RUPP this past week, as well as his play all season and a resume like he has it would be a JOKE if he wasn't named Mr. Basketball. I for one would beat that there was no player in the state that meant as much to their team as EJ did so take the best player, from the best team in the state and that my friends should = Mr. Basketball IMO.

^ Great post. I believe that Elisha has done too much this year to not be rewarded with the Mr. Basketball crown and a scholly to wherever (hoping it is Krebs at UK).

I don't see how you can say this with Aaron Watts being ranked in front of him. I know his team came out of the region the last two years and Watts did not but any coach in the 12th region except for one will tell you Watts is the best player in the region. You are right there's not enough to garner either player the award.

I had read a lot of posts on here from people saying that Elisha should win based on his Sweet Sixteen performance, and others saying that Mr. Basketball was voted on two weeks ago, so it won't matter. Who's right? They both are.

This is the info that I got directly from the KY Lion's Eye Foundation (the organization that gives the award) website. It states that all ballots were sent out on Friday, March 12, 5 days before the Sweet Sixteen starts. The deadline for all ballots to be returned is Wednesday, March 24.

So, it appears that the voters have almost a two week span in which to cast their ballot. They can choose to go ahead and vote as soon as they get their ballot, and essentially disregard the state tournament. Or, they can wait until after the state champion is crowned and take what happened during the tournament into account.

I wonder how many voters waited and how many did not. Personally, I hope they all waited long enough to see Elisha's MVP performance down at Rupp!

^ if they have the two weeks to send it in, given that most waited til after the tourney, I would say most acknowledge that Justice is the most important player and deserving of the Mr. Basketball award.
He should win it but I dont think he will. It really is a big deal to people if a Kentucky player signs with Lville. Everyone knows the rest of the state hate UofL!

Elisha hasn't signed with anyone.

He has only committed to be a walk-on, therefore he can still be recruited by other colleges.
After seeing Justice at the state tournament, I'd say he is the most deserving of the candidates. He performed very well (understatement) down the stretch and led his team to a state championship against some solid competition.

Whether it's Sewell of Justice that gets the award, I think both are vry deserving recipients. Both are model student athletes and I'd have no argument against either winning.
Once again i will say this to you all... [B]THE VOTING WAS DONE BEFORE THE STATE TOURNAMENT!!!!!! so all ej done at rupp was not recognized in the voting process... he could have score 100 in a game down there and it wouldn't have mattered at all
EJ No doubt. If not then voting is messed up

No it wasn't, you COULD vote before the state tournament, but you didn't have to turn your vote in until today I believe.

Amen. Im not as filmilar on Sewell but with Elisha you get a smart (4.0) student, with a great head on his shoulders and amazing leadership skills for his team.

Potentially, yes, all of the voting could have been done before the state tourney but seeing as though the deadline was not until today I think that most coaches believe that the state tourney plays an important factor in their opinion. So I would have to believe that most did not send it in before the tourney.
E.J. Mr.Basketabll go ahead an write it down no doubt on picking him.
sounds like big man on campus isn't so big.
An absolute travesty if Elisha doesn't get Mr. Basketball, He's the winner hands down. He's done so much for SV. MVP after MVP.

He should anyway.
Justice has had the best year out of any player in the state. He broke the all time steal record, averaged crazy stats constantly throughout the year, and led his team to the STATE TITLE. I mean isnt that what any great high school player is trying to accomplish?
Anthony Wireman of allkyhoops' thoughts on Mr. Basketball.

- Also, we should have a new Mr. Basketball soon. If Elisha Justice doesn’t win the honor, I’m calling for a vote recount.

Nothing against anyone, but I bet this is already decided.....Justice by a clearshot.....not only had an impressive State Tourney (one that wont be forgotten any time soon for us mountain Basketball fans) but has been able to showcase his talented in several tourney's and big games in which his coaches are to be commended for scheduling and playing!

Also part of a team that had players that knew their roles and carried them out to the fullest!
