I hate to bring this up again, but does anyone really believe that Highlands is the third best team in the country? They are very good and I don't mean to belittle their accomplishment as the best team in Kentucky. That said, they wouldn't be top ten in some states.
These National rankings are just ludicrous. Highlands lofty ranking is based almost entirely on their win over Cincy St. X. At one point some polls had the Bombers ranked as high as number one in the country. They ended up losing three games and were eliminated in the second round of the Ohio playoffs.
Now, I'll sit back and wait on the nasty remarks to come my way! :biggrin:

I saw all the top teams in Ohio play throughout the season and up in Stark County for the championships and I saw Highlands play. Not that this is any barometer of national rankings, but there wasn't a team in Ohio that Highlands couldn't beat 8 out of 10 times.
Talent wise no one, and I mean no one in the country has the talent Cleveland Glenville has. Top to bottom more future NFL talent on that team, just not as cohesive as a bunch than a Highlands or a Hilliard Davidson.
I would guess Highlands could lose to any of the other Top 50 scholastic teams, but I would bet they could just as easily beat most of them too. Having not seen a team lake Lake Travis out of TX or Don Bosco, can't say that definitively; but Highlands certainly merits their final ranking.

Yes. See voting results.
My personal opinion: yes (which apparently makes me part of the majority).

Yes, these polls are an inexact science to say the very least. But as a Kentucky sports fan I am glad to see that a high school program from the state is gaining some national attention. If you finish the season undefeated and win a state championship in a fairly dominating fashion like Highlands did then you deserve all of the praise that anybody is willing to give you. Besides, these rankings do not mean anything as far as the actual crowning of a state champ. People had their chance to beat Highlands and they didn't so how can they complain about where they are ranked? Congrats Highlands!!!

That statement is so silly that I won't even rebutt it. I'll let it stand on its own.
For the record, I know Ohio high school football pretty well.

No nasty remarks. I'm guessing though that there isn't anything anyone can say to convince you otherwise. No team in the Super 25 could say definitively that they could beat every team below them nor would they admit defeat to every team above them. I don't think that is what is intended by this ranking either. It's a recognition of the team and program. My guess is that Highlands' ranking reflects factors like the following:
Undefeated season
3 state titles in a row
1 loss for seniors over 4 years
Big win over nationally ranked team in nationally televised game
Overcame loss of experienced, starting quarterback
Several D1 prospects
High scoring offense and stingy defense
Winning program (in fact, at the top in the country in this category as well)
Again, this doesn't mean that HHS beats all but 2 teams all the time. It does mean that others outside the state recognize the program.

Nice post. You and I can definitely agree on that.
I am not saying that Highlands isn't a good team. They are the best team in Kentucky this season. Kentucky is a rather small pond to swim in though. Several states represent much larger ponds (i.e. Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey, Illinois, etc...) thus the fish that swim in them tend to be much larger as well. Fish only grow as large as their environment allows.
Highlands got a win against a decent Cincy St. X team this season and they are to be applauded for that. Historically though, Highlands hasn't fared very well against Ohio powers:
* Colerain 0-2
* Elder 0-4
* Moeller 0-3
* St. Xavier 3-5
* Columbus Desales 0-2
Even the record against some of Ohio's non powers is mediocre at best:
* Hughes 3-3
* Oak Hills 1-1
* Walnut Hills 1-1
* Western Hills 6-3-1
* Woodward 2-2
* Withrow 1-2
* Loveland 0-2
* Milford 6-3
* Norwood 6-9-1
Once again; I'm not dissing Highlands. They are clearly the best team in Kentucky this season. This season and historically though they are not on the level of the powers in "football states".
Back in 2001, Super Prep or one of the magazines, had Boyle County rated number 15 in the nation. Now Boyle County probably had the best team in Kentucky that season regardless of class. Still, there were five teams in Cincinnati that year that would have crushed the Rebels. I love Boyle County; but even then I knew that they were no where near the top teams in the country.
This is all opinion (just like any poll) and mine stinks just like everybody's else does. You will never convince me that Highlands is the third best team in the nation and I will never convince you that they aren't.
Peace out! :thanks:

First off, I've never saw Highlands play this year so this opinion isn't based on anything. To answer your question no. I don't think they are the number 3 team in the country, but the top 2 rank teams may not be worthy of their rankings either. I think Highland is a great team and am glad they are ranked so high.

When were some of these games? I don't recall ever lossing to Withrow.
Also, they beat a very good Trotwood Madison in 2007.

You must have taken a wrong turn and ended up in Ohio. Ended up watching the Ohio state football championships. My advice, buy a GPS! All but a couple of those players played in the Ft. Thomas Junior Football League since grade 3 or 4.
Where are you from? I have been reading this forum for a year now. I held my tongue up until this ignorant post. Perhaps I get kicked out before I even get in. But I just could not let this post go un-answered. Ignorant! I have a child that will soon play for Highlands and find it really embarassing that some of the people on this forum, from down state, or even out of state, hate on Highlands so much. My son was born in Chicago. However, we have lived in Ft. Thomas for 12 of his 14 years. Does that make him a Chicago product? Give me a break!!
Congrats to the Birds! Hope to be watching # 4 in a row in 2010!

Maybe they have businesses in OH and those are vehicles that they use for business purposes. That is more a concern of cheating the state of KY out of paying property tax on a vehicle. I have to admit I do see a TON of that going on in Ft. Thomas. This can be reported by citizens so those people do walk a fine line when doing this. I think this is what you mean when you say you saw a ton of OH plates with Highlands decals. I wont argue with you there but to say that the families live in OH is absurd. 98% of the players that are on the roster generally have lived in the Ft. Thomas community for atleast the last 5 yrs as many either move in during grade school years because of the school systems or they grow up from birth in the city. You only see 2-3 every other year that might move in for Frosh year and it is clearly legal as long as you move and live in the community.

His 29th post and still trying to find a way to say something that is either accurate or intelligent. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again.

Some tiny highschool in northeast Ohio has played all of those Cincinnati area schools and has the same record as Fort Thomas? What a coincidence! :eyeroll:
