What the Shelby County softball team lacks in depth it will try to make up for with determination and dedication this season.
The Rockets will be one of the smallest teams in the 8th Region, if not the state â with only 10 players on their varsity roster â but theyâll also look to improve on their five victories from last season.
"The girls are confident and eager to get started," said Shelby County Coach Kelly Cable, whose team opens its season Monday at North Oldham. âI expect better things all around, especially because we've been there one year, we've got one year experience under out belt."
Last season, the Rockets returned only one player with varsity experience â the now-graduated Hannah Abbott â but this year several players return from the 2011 squad.
"With age comes maturity and strength and I think they're stronger, which will help as far as throwing and hitting," said Cable, whose team went 5-19 last season and ended its season with a 4-2 loss to Spencer County in the 30th District Tournament semifinals.
Leading the way are seniors Brittany Kendall and Danielle DeSilvey, both of whom have committed to Midway College, and Hayley Powell, a newcomer.
"I have good leadership in my three seniors," Cable said.
Once again Kendall will anchor the infield at shortstop and DeSilvey will pitch most of the games.
"I know that Danielle, she's worked really, really hard in the offseason to improve her pitching," Cable said. "I'm really pleased with how hard she's worked."
Powell played for Shelby Countyâs basketball team the last two seasons
âShe's a great addition to our team," Cable said. âShe's got a great attitude, work ethic, she fits right in with the girls.â¦Sheâs versatile.â
Two juniors who also return from last season are center fielder Ariana Jones and first baseman Keaton Jesse.
The rest of the Rocketsâ roster is made up of three freshmen â Kara Wiley, Kayla Shepherd and Madison Wills - and two eighth-graders â Sydney Wright and Abby Wills. Wiley will take over for Abbott behind the plate, and Wright, who along with Jesse will provide relief of DeSilvey, moves from the outfield to the infield this season.
"They're a pretty close group. They get a long very well," Cable said.
The Rocketsâ home opener â and their only game at the Shelby County Athletic Complex before March 30 â is Thursday against South Oldham.

Shelby County senior Danielle DeSilvey (seen here last year) is one of three seniors, and one of only 10 players on the Rockets’ roster this season.
