A big shot and a big defensive effort in the second half carried the Collins boys’ basketball team Thursday.

Tavis Elzy’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer that ended the first half combined with the Titans’ passion to play D lifted them to a 73-56 victory over archrival Shelby County in the third-place game of the Max Performance Boys’ Invitational at Collins.

Elzy’s 3-pointer – from about 25-feet out – gave Collins a 6-point lead at halftime, 41-35, after the Rockets had just trimmed the Titans’ advantage to three.

It was a big day for Elzy, who was also named to The Associated Press All-State second team for his football exploits on Thursday.

“Elzy’s shot at the end of the half, that took away a lot of our momentum,” Shelby County Coach Rick Parsons said. “It was a big shot…clock ticking down, hand in his face.”

Collins outscored the Rockets in the second half, 32-21.

“We turned up the defense,” said senior guard Jake Edwards, who scored a game-high 15 points. “We just decided we weren’t going to let them score anymore.”

The Titans (9-4), who beat Shelby, 77-50, on Dec. 3, broke out to a big lead just like they did in the first meeting between the two teams, outscoring the Rockets, 21-10, in the first quarter. This time, though, Shelby fought back.

“This one was a little better,” Parsons said. “I think we got their attention a little bit.”

The Rockets outscored Collins, 25-20, in the second period.

“They did a good job of moving the ball and getting opens threes on us in the first half, especially the second quarter,” Titans Coach Curtis Turley said. “Probably four of those threes were uncontested, we didn’t rotate out in transition.”

Of course Collins’ halftime lead would have been slimmer if not for Elzy’s shot.

“It gave us a little momentum going into halftime,” said Elzy, who scored 12 points. “We were a little sluggish in the first half [Collins was 3-for-16 from the foul line], and we let them hang around and let the game be closer than it should have been.”

Said Edwards: “That [shot] got us ready to come out in the second half and play hard.”

The Titans took over in the third quarter, outscoring the Rockets, 17-9.

“We focused more on playing good, solid defense and matching up with their shooters,” Turley said.

Sophomore forward Dez Marshall and freshman guard Ralphie Stone added 11 points apiece for the Titans, who travel to Anderson County next Friday for a key district game.

Kyle Frinak scored 11 points to lead Shelby, which plays at Western Hills on Tuesday.
