Holmes
Coach: Stephen Lickert (29-35, 16-17 at school)

Last year: 9-3 (lost 25-7 to Lexington Catholic in second round)

Players to watch: Senior RB-DB Damian Oden; senior QB Jesse Jensen; senior OL-LB Tommy Courtney; senior LB-RB Tyrique Simpson; senior OL-DL Kenny Sheffield; junior RB-LB Greg Clemons; sophomore WR-DB Dasean Peterson.

Other key players: Senior DL Idrees Marshall; senior OL Derek Poe; junior WR-DB D.J. Coston; junior DL-TE Charles Knox; junior LB Deshauntey McClendon OL-DL; junior DB Carlos Gipson.

Fun facts: Peterson finished seventh in Class 4A with 639 receiving yards as a freshman. Jensen had over 1,000 yards passing and had more than 900 yards rushing.

Outlook: Although the Bulldogs need to rebuild a chunk of the offensive line, develop greater overall depth and limit turnovers, the prognosis is excellent after going unbeaten in their first year in the district. The Bulldogs return nine starters on both offense and defense, and most of the top contributors are back. Anything less than a trip to the state championship game would be a disappointment. "That's our goal," said Lickert.

"Last year, the kids got a taste of success and it has made them ****ry for more success. The attendance and effort in the weight room this year was the best in many years. The kids are much stronger. This is the fastest Holmes team in a long time. We have multiple kids who can score in an instant and we return every kid, except one, that scored a touchdown last year."

Pendleton County
Coach: Terry Brown (first year)

Last year: 7-4 (lost 62-0 to Lexington Catholic in first round)

Players to watch: Senior WR-DB Aaron Bonar, junior QB-DB Sam Harrison, junior WR-LB Tyler Harrison, junior RB-LB Travis Daughtery.

Fun fact: The Wildcats enjoyed their second winning season of the decade last year.

Outlook: Pendleton County did not have that many players on the roster last season with 29. But, it lost a lot, and it lost its head coach. Lee Teegarden resigned this summer and Brown has taken over the reins. "I've been with the team a short period of time," Brown said. "We are going to be a spread team that runs the zone read, and we are going to play the 3-3 stack on defense."

Brown expects to have about 20 returnees, including at least nine juniors and nine sophomores. There could be less than a half-dozen seniors on the roster. Building continuity is essential. With so many two-way starters, avoiding injuries will be critical. And the Wildcats need to keep finding ways to stay fresh at the end of games, and late in the season, or Bourbon County, Franklin County and Harrison County, all of which had losing seasons last year, may pass them by.
