Not necessarily. There are some students out there who do an amazing job as team managers, trainers, and other supporting titles. They go well above and beyond the duty of most others and there is no reason why they shouldn't be recognized.
If it were so dumb, professional athletes and organizations wouldn't be very picky and have particular people they pay big dollars for these services. There are students who have gotten college scholarships for athlete training and are making a living by it.
