Ben Sheets

The Chicago Cubs are have apparently decided to "make a run" at right-handed pitcher Ben Sheets, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Sheets missed last season as he recovered from elbow surgery but that certainly didn't stop Cubs general manager Jim Hendry reportedly talking to Sheets at the winter meetings in early December. Sheets supposedly has named Chicago as one of the cities that he wouldn't mind ending up in.

At some point, Sheets was supposedly asking for a two-year deal for more than $10 million a season. What is more likely to happen is for the Cubs to offer Sheets an incentive-laden contract.

Sheets would join the front end of the Cubs' rotation with Carlos Zambrano and lead the way for Ryan Dempster, Carlos Silva, and Ted Lilly.

Heath Bell

Heath Bell had 42 saves for the San Diego Padres last year and an ERA of 2.71 so you can imagine that plenty of teams would love to have him on the roster. It appears that the Chicago Cubs wouldn't mind doing something to make that happen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The paper reports that the team is "kicking the tires again" a trade with the Padres for Bell. If Bell came to the Windy City, he would likely supplant current Cubs closer Carlos Marmol, who only had 15 saves last year and an ERA of 3.41.

Other Cubs news includes that Marlon Byrd isn't expected to play center field at Wrigley Field for the next three years even though he just signed a deal for that long. The word is that Brett Jackson, a first-round pick this past summer, should be ready to go by the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012.

They're already thanking Marlon for the memories in Chicago before he's started a game there.
