Newport Central Catholic did not take long to seal its fifth straight win Friday night during a 63-19 win over Carroll County in the opener of the Class 2A state playoffs at Newport Stadium.

Despite being without longtime head coach Bob Schneider for a second straight game, the Thoroughbreds led 28-0 after a dominating first quarter and left an overmatched Panthers team looking to next season.

“That was the plan all week,” junior running back Chris Kelly said. “We knew we were a lot better team as long as we came out and performed.”

NewCath will play Christian Academy or Lloyd next week.

Schneider, who leads the state in career victories, recently was hospitalized with blood clots and a heart problem. The 71-year-old coach also missed last week’s victory over Beechwood, the first game he had missed in his 44-year career.

“He’s doing well,” assistant coach Dave Schneider said of his father. “He’s home, resting, trying to get better. He’s frustrated he can’t be around the team. This is his favorite time of year, playoff season and so forth.”

There is no definite word on when Bob Schneider might return to the sideline.

“I would say it’s doubtful for next week still, probably even for the rest of the playoffs,” Dave Schneider said. “He’s just got to take care of what he’s got to take care of. He’s got to get better.

“He’s in the back of all our minds. It’s just a different feel down here without coach.”

But with Dave Schneider at the helm again, the Breds ran wild early.

Kelly gained the first 105 yards from scrimmage for NewCath, all on the ground and scored two of his four touchdowns in the first quarter. The junior got the Breds on the board with a 21-yard TD run, picking up every one of the 71 yards NewCath gained on its opening drive
