Congrats Colnels
Although Dixie Heights snapped Holmes’ unbeaten start in a 21-12 victory Friday at Dixie, the Colonels weren’t overwhelmed by their performance.

Quarterback Ryan Wilson, who threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns, said Dixie could have played better. Ditto for coach Tom Spritzky, who had hoped for more consistency in the running game.

Dixie was shut out in the second half and struggled with their ground campaign, in part because of steady rain that lingered after the break.

“We’re always happy to win,” Spritzky said. “I guess we came into the game thinking that we could do a better job controlling the ball and moving the ball.”

It was a mild upset as Dixie, ranked eighth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, downed the seventh-ranked Bulldogs. Holmes is also seventh in the Class 4A Associated Press poll.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Holmes’ grass field. Rain muddied the surface and the game was moved earlier Friday to Dixie’s artificial turf.
There, the Bulldogs dropped to 6-1.

Turnovers, including a pair of muffed punts, doomed Holmes on a night when its offense struggled to convert and Dixie players like Ben Wolfe and Zeke Pike came up with big plays both sides of the ball.

Wolfe and Pike each scored a touchdown. Pike also came up with an interception, Wolfe had key tackles, and together they sacked Holmes quarterback Jesse Jenson in the fourth quarter.

Holmes set itself back with the mishandled punts, the first of which capped Dixie’s opening drive. The Colonels punted on fourth down but the ball touched the returner before Josh Stegner recovered it on Holmes’ 31-yard line.

Wilson found Bobby Leonard in the end zone on the next play.

The Bulldogs twice settled for field goals after marching within the 10-yard line and scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter.

Holmes coach Stephen Lickert found positives in the loss, like resilience. A year ago, things like muffed punts would have weighed them down and contributed to their losses. Now the team moves past them.

Part of the change comes from a move from Class 5A to the smaller 4A. The Bulldogs are in the midst of a first winning season since 2001.

Because if their new schedule, the Bulldogs were difficult for Dixie to assess.
“They’ve played teams from out of the area and some teams locally that we don’t play,” Spritzky said.

Scott is the teams’ only common opponent. Dixie beat the Eagles 44-0 and Holmes plays them Oct. 16

Holmes could have easily won this game. They really hurt themselves with mental mistakes.

After forcing Dixie to a 3 and out their first possession, Oden muffed the punt and Dixie got the ball back, scoring the very next play to go up 7-0.

On Holmes next possession they scored a td to tie the game up, but an offensive lineman downfield on the play negated the TD and Holmes had to settle for the Fg, down 7-3.

Dixie scored again to go up 14-3 and on the next possession, Holmes drove down to the 1 yard line but pentalties pushed them back and they had to settle for another FG. So instead of the game being tied 14-14 or Holmes up 14-7, they found themselves down 14-6.

Dixie got the ball back with 3 minutes left til half and drove right down the field in I believe 6 or 7 plays to score and put them up 21-6 heading in to the half.

Second half Holmes defense stepped up big time but their offense couldn't convert. Holmes drove in to Dixie territory time after time but couldn't put it in the end zone, outside of a third quarter td run by Jensen.

A few positives for Holmes fans:

- Freshman Desean Peterson had over 100 yards receiving and time after time was out-jumping the Dixie DB's for long receptions in key 3rd-4th and long situations.

-Junior QB Jesse Jensen rushed and passed for over 100 yards.

- After giving up 21 in the first half, Holmes defense shut Dixie down in the second half.

- Holmes best days may be ahead of them. When you look at who is making plays for them, it is primarily underclassmen. They are going to be VERY good next year.
