Sign ups for club volleyball at the sportsplex is Oct. 29, 2009 @ 7:00pm. Check out the website www.knottcountysportsplex.com for more info or contact Sherry Robinson @ 606-791-0606 or sherrysue98@yahoo.com.
How many players from same school are allowed on the same club team? Are the teams comprised mostly of their regular high school team? Are there tryouts?
Each team usually has about 10 players per team. Some teams are comprised of girls from the same school and some teams have girls from different schools also. No, there is not any try outs, although Sherry wants to try to put together a travel club team and then there would be try outs for the travel team.
Will the club team be a USAV team and participate in their tourneys? If there is a club travel team, what age group would it be?
Yes, the travel team will participate in tournaments and will hopefully be part of Pioneer Volleyball Association. The ages would depend on the age of the girls interested in trying out.
Does your traveling team or club teams help the girls get scholarships to college. What else does it have to offer and how much does it cost to be on a club team.
Who will be the coach for the traveling team.
The only way that it could help with getting scholarships is if there are any recuiting coaches at the tournaments we choose to attend. The cost of being on the travel team would depend on the cost of the tournaments and the cost of the traveling on the weekend to and from the tournaments. As of right now Sherry Robinson plans on being the travel team coach. KHSAA rules prevents high school coaches from being travel team coaches. If you want more information, call Sherry, her cell #791-0606.
I think some of the other clubs in Kentucky actively pursue scholarships for the ladies belonging to their club travel teams? Correct me if I'm wrong. Their websites will show committed players and the colleges they will be attending. This could be a great opportunity for the girls in the 15th region.
Yes, those club teams probably do. This is the first year of trying to organize a travel team and it takes alot to get one started. It depends on the amount of interest and the cost of all of the traveling. Once it is up and started, then we can focus on helping the girls in every way possible. It's all about promoting volleyball in eastern Ky and helping all of eastern Ky become more educated about volleyball.
It's great that finally the volleyball players from eastern Ky will have the same opportunities as players from central and western ky. The sportsplex is a really nice facility. Eastern ky needs to take advantage of what they have to offer.
A travel team picked from tryouts will provide those girls opportunities to play with a team with a skill level of the best of the players of this area; however much more is needed to provide them with the "same" opportunities.

Trainers should be working with the team pre-season and in-season for conditioning, strength training, and assessing each player individually to prevent common injuries often seen in girls from this area. Does the Sportsplex have an onsite Trainer and staff available to work with the team?

Club volleyball is taking the sport to another level of tougher competition and it becomes even more important to be in the best shape physically to endure the competition.
Sounds like a good thing going on here. Good Luck.

How many years has the sportsplex been doing this? Is there a lot of participation?

I thought high school coaches were not allowed to coach any of their high school players on club teams, travel teams or not travel treams; but they could coach other club travel/not travel as long as none of the players were on their high school team (varsity, i think). Correct me if I'm wrong.
Players in our area would be much better off to go up to the club volleyball program in Huntington that Marshall University puts on. The coaches are all from Marshall.

The practicality of your suggestion needs to be explored. First of all, travel time from 'our' area is approximately 3 hours there and back, of course that equates to gas costs...plus availability of the parent(s) to transport their kids and maybe others to practices and tournaments. The costs for a volleyball player, if they make the team, would be $900 approximately to play on the 'national' team, approximately $650 to play on the regional team, $200 for the Sunday League play. Another thing, a player is not guaranteed equal play time, just because you pay does not mean you play. There are other incidental costs, like travel to tournaments in different states, lodging, coaching pay, meals, etc. Parents are also obligated to support the Marshall Team as a booster as a 'thank you' for their support of club volleyball. The parents are also obligated to 'FUND RAISING' for club volleyball.

It is great that the kids in the Huntington area have this opportunity; however, it is not practical for our girls. How about we concentrate on helping make the Sportsplex program a success. Let's face it, 'our' area is years behind Northern, Central, and Western Kentucky because basketball has been king here. The 15th Region volleyball programs did not even start until approximately 1998 - long after the first Kentucky State volleyball tournament.
Parents do what they want to do for their childred or refuse to do things when they could. The costs for club volleyball is not much when you consider what money parents spend on kids from month to month for other things. Being a booster parent and fundraising is no different from our high school booster volleyball club. If kids want to go to college with volleyball in mind, Hindman is not going to do it.

True - if parents can afford it. Scenario: Single parent, three children, one is an aspiring volleyball player who has the stats to make it to the college level. Parent has very little income each month and drives an unreliable vehicle...will the volleyball player benefit from what Huntington has to offer or will the sportsplex provide the opportunity to keep playing and maintain her volleyball skills in the off season. Look, the best thing a player can do in the off season if they want to make it to the next level is to keep playing the sport which could possibly lead them to a scholarship...
