Dixie Heights principal Kim Banta will be standing outside the Bank of Kentucky Center on Thursday evening looking to get rid of a big stack of Ninth Region boys’ basketball tournament tickets.

But she’s not scalping. In fact, she already knows she’s going to take a huge loss.
“It’s worth it,” she said.

Banta recently heard some concerns about the tournament’s $8 ticket prices and their effect on attendance. Instead of hoping her students would pay the fee to cheer on the Colonels, she took matters into her own hands. On Tuesday she used money from the school’s bottled-water vending machines to purchase 300 tickets to today’s Dixie Heights vs. Newport Central Catholic first round game. They’ll be passed out to Dixie students and faculty.

“With this economy, I personally just didn’t like the fact that it will cost $8 for our students to go see their own peers play,” she said. “And making it to the regional tournament is a big deal. I don’t want our team playing with just 25 or 30 (Dixie) kids there.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, 260 of the 300 tickets had been spoken for. Teachers and students signed up to receive a voucher which they’ll exchange at the door tonight for an acual ticket. Bank of Kentucky Center officials told Banta she could return any remaining tickets for a full refund.

That is really sweet and such a good plan.
Very nice gesture by the principal.
