Thoroughbreds upset Bluebirds

Bodies collided repeatedly in the paint. Players time and again dove to the floor for loose balls, and both head coaches road roller coasters of emotions as they paced the floor in front of their benches during a game replete with wild momentum swings.

The fierce Highlands-Newport Central Catholic girls' basketball rivalry added another dizzying chapter Friday night as the Thoroughbreds upset the Bluebirds 51-45 in the 36th District final at NewCath.

Both teams advance to next week's Ninth Region tournament.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked No. 4 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, won their first district title since 2005.

The 'Breds (22-8) did it by knocking off two-time defending district champion Highlands (24-5) in their first season under former NewCath boys' basketball coach Ron Dawn.

"Whenever you beat a good team that's well-coached, it feels great to win. And this feels especially good because the girls beat their rival," Dawn said. "I couldn't be happier for our players."

The Bluebirds, ranked No. 2 locally, entered play unbeaten against regional competition and riding a 15-game winning streak in the region.

Highlands eliminated NewCath from postseason play in last year's first round of the district tournament, one year after beating the 'Breds in the 2007 district final.

Friday's victory was NewCath's first win against Highlands since Dec. 29, 2006. The win avenged a 54-48 NewCath loss to the Bluebirds on Jan. 9.

"We played smarter this time, and we played a lot better on defense," said the 'Breds' Janie Giesler.

Giesler led the 'Breds with 12 points and eight rebounds and was named all-tournament along with teammates Mariah Tabor and Courtney Sandfoss.

Tabor gave NewCath the lead for good, 35-33, with two free throws at the 3:57 of the fourth quarter. She scored all six points in the final quarter.

Sandfoss, who had six assists and four steals, locked down on Highlands' Katie Allen, who was held to five points.

NewCath limited Highlands' other top scorer, center Bekah Towles, with sagging help defense. Towles had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Highlands managed just 35.9 percent shooting from the field and converted just 23.1 percent of its shots from 3-point range.

The Bluebirds hit just one basket while scoring three points in the first quarter. They had just one field goal over the final six minutes of the third quarter and went three minutes without a basket in the fourth.

"They used a gimmick defense, but we had the shots," Highlands coach Jaime Richey said. "They just weren't falling."

Mallory Adler, who scored nine points Friday, and Allie Connor, who had eight points, were named all-tournament for Highlands.
