Buzz up! Asia Mathies' quick hands and quick feet got the Iroquois High School girls' basketball team off to a quick start toward a district title.

She converted back-to-back steals into layups for a 4-0 lead, and the Lady Raiders never trailed in a 68-54 victory over defending state champion Butler in last night's 22nd District Tournament final at Doss.

Mathies, an All-Sixth Region pick, scored 15 points but provided her best work on the defensive end.

"Defense is all about attitude and swagger," she said. "It makes it easy for your offense to come to you when you play good defense. They say to do what you don't want done to you."

Iroquois completed the district sweep when its boys' team beat Doss 57-56 in two overtimes.

Girls: Iroquois, No. 3 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, improved to 26-1 with its 11th straight victory. The Lady Raiders will be prohibitive favorites when the Sixth Region Tournament opens Tuesday at Bellarmine University's Knights Hall. They're 11-0 against regional competition, winning by an average of 28.5 points.

"This is the first of hopefully three steps," said coach Al Northington, hoping to add regional and state titles to his district crown. "This is the last go-round for these seniors, and I tell them that they'll never get another chance. … You know there are some upsets on the horizon, and we don't want to be one of them."

Stafonia Taylor led Iroquois with 17 points, and Kayla Hickman added 11. Whitney Reed scored 13 for Butler (17-6), whose 10-game winning streak ended. Coach Eddy Wilson noted that Iroquois scored 24 points off his team's turnovers.

"That's the story of the game right there," he said. "If we take care of the ball, we can play with them."

By halftime the Lady Raiders led 32-20 and the Bearettes had 15 turnovers. Mathies forced several.

"I think she probably leads the state in steals," Northington said. "She gives good defensive pressure and is just flat-out a heck of a defensive player."

Iroquois led 47-25 after three quarters before a 9-1 run got Butler within 48-34 with 4:34 left. But the Bearettes never got closer than 12.

Northington wouldn't be surprised to see Butler again in next Saturday's regional final.

"The next one would be the big one," he said.
