I read this on another site and found it to be a very interesting read. The following article has been attributed to Jay Leno. I'm not sure if he really wrote/said it or not, but I think it hits the mark.

'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President.

In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J... You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day. Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like OJ. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' Gas??
RavenBoy Wrote:Gas??

That's one possibilty lol
The first attack on the World Trade Center occured in 1993. Across the board security changes did not happen. Eight years passed. I would not discredit President Bush for six plus years of no attacks; however, it is simplistic to draw a straight line of credit to this administration. Many spiritual teachers have said in all kinds of ways, basically, that life does not consist in the abundance of comforts and possessions.
Yeah all that stuff mentioned is real good. But what about when you walk in that grocery store of food, and can only afford to buy one $4 gallon of milk for your kids at home? What about when you can't afford the gas to go to the **** store in the first place? We have it great in our nation, but the daggone gas is ridiculous and everyone knows it, I remember going to the pump with my mother years ago and thinking it was crazy paying $1.19 for a gallon, but $4 for gas? Someone has got their priorities in the wrong place. Those people who sell their barrels of oil for $140 are the ones who don't have to use gas, they fly in their pretty little airplanes and get bussed around all day by employees, some people in this country are stupid i tell ya.

No, because the hard working people who have this are out in the cold and heat working all day and don't get to enjoy it.

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
Yeah, but 95.4% of these people are probably unhappy with their jobs.

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
Some people can't afford groceries because they're trying to pay for the gas to get there.

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?
Most people don't drive at all anymore.

Hotels are just for traveling and business purposes anymore, which is becoming more and more rare.

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.
Sad thing is, the people working in these places can't afford to eat in them when not working.

I don't believe this statistic.

Jay Leno

That's all I have to say.
A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?
Some people can't afford to pay for these necessities.
Can you name 10? I know hundreds on welfare who have these necessities, plus can afford to buy beer and cigarettes every day. I don't know of anyone who doesn't have running water and electricity, and I live in the most poverty stricken place in America.

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
No, because the hard working people who have this are out in the cold and heat working all day and don't get to enjoy it.
Bull crap! While many do work hard and many even in the mines, these qualities are enjoyed every time they come home and plop back in the recliner and watch TV for 2 solid hours, or go to bed in a soft bed in the coolness of their home. Even if they work 60 hours a week, they still get to come home to a cool house and sleep in a nice bed.

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
Yeah, but 95.4% of these people are probably unhappy with their jobs.
I do believe that 100% of these people had a choice in the job they take. More than half probably paid for and went to college to take a job in the field they're unhappy with. Even if some had to get whatever job they could to pay for bills, they still had a choice and still have a choice of looking for different work.

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
Some people can't afford groceries because they're trying to pay for the gas to get there.
I don't see very many starving skinny people walking around. However, I do see 60% of Americans being overweight. Maybe they can't afford the eating habits they're used to, but I seriously doubt anyone is starving.

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?
Most people don't drive at all anymore.
Have you been on the roads lately? I just drove to Louisville and home, and there was so many vehicles on the road. And the funny thing is, there are still a butt load of SUV's and full-size trucks running around even with the higher gas prices.

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
Hotels are just for traveling and business purposes anymore, which is becoming more and more rare.
But they're still there and many at good prices. And they are clean for the most part. What is the going rate for a Days Inn these days? About $49 bucks a night. That's not too bad.

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.
Sad thing is, the people working in these places can't afford to eat in them when not working.
Yet they're still in business making a butt load of money from the people who can't afford to eat there. The mexican and chinese restaurants are full in southeast Kentucky nearly every day. In the last 5 years, even more of these restaurants have opened up. They're making money somewhere.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.
This is a great thing, and the people who rescue us don't get paid near enough.
This I agree with. But obviously it does pay pretty good. And many places have volunteer fighters and helpers. And even they get the best training.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
I don't believe this statistic.
But yet it is true. 70 percent of Americans own their own home. Most went into great debt to get it, and still owe a lot. But they had choices in buying what they did.

J... You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.
These people should also be paid more.
Again agreed. However, as stated earlier, many of them are even volunteers in smaller communities who still receive top notch training.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.
Not all cops are good cops.
What does this have to do with anything? Many police officers are corrupt. Most however are pretty good at what they do and put their lives at risk every day. Many people are not very good people, yet they still get their lives and belongings saved by the good cops and good firefighters.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.
Don't believe this statistic either.
Are you kidding me? Been to a high school lately! Nearly every kid walking around is texting or talking on a cell phone. Even if they are wearing clothes that look like they haven't been washed or cleaned in weeks, they have a Motorola Razr or Blackberry.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Sometimes these freedoms are too much.
Oh really! How so? Maybe the government should force you to be Muslim and if you don't, then kill you. Or maybe the government should force you to be socialist and believe in no God other than the government, or maybe we should have a King who thinks he is god an make you worship him. How would you like that?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. I'm with you...just doesn't sound like Leno.
In case someone cares it doesn't appear that anyone knows who originated this essay. Snopes says one line can be attributed to Leno.http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/hitnail.asp
It does NOT say why they are unhappy...Sad to see others are assuming what the majority thinks...

Just because the majority is not happy does NOT mean the majority is ungrateful...

IMHO the time has come for the people to speak up about what the Republicans have done the last 8 years...

Our econonmy is horrible...

Gas...gas...gas...oh did I mention the price of gas....

If anyone disagrees please respond...

I will enjoy the dialogue...

Yeah, but 95.4% of these people are probably unhappy with their jobs.
At least they have a job.

Nothing to say about this one, it's ridiculous.

No, because the hard working people who have this are out in the cold and heat working all day and don't get to enjoy it.
Also this one makes no sense.

You are just like the people that Jay Leno or whoever wrote those things are talking about...You are too blind to see that we have the best country in the world, no other country come close to having it as good as we do.

Congrats to Michael Phelps and the entire US swimming team... And China is best at gymnastics... And Jamaican star Bolt is the fastest man... so, again, diversity of who is "best"...
China is not the best at gymnastics. On the women's side they cheated using girls under 16. On the men's side the Americans best 2 gymnasts were injured. Also, I'm sure there are some players in the NFL who if instead of focusing on football would have focused on track, would be as fast or faster than Bolt. Even with that Tyson Gay if not injured could be as fast or faster. America completely dominates the olympics in events that actually matter.

If I thought you were serious, I would say, "If/then why what...is that all that you've got?" Bolt is the most ridiculously effortless speed burner I've ever seen. Tyson Gay would not have beaten Holt, healthy or not, at these Olympic games.

Tyson holds the AR with a 9.77. There is no reason to believe he would not have improved as much as Bolt did before the olympics if not hampered by injury.
He may not have won, who knows. Bolt is an amazing runner, but when the top competition is out it makes a difference.

It is agreed upon by track and field enthusiasts everywhere that Bolt's performance in the 100m and 200m is the best in Olympic history. Gay would have been beaten as soundly as the rest of the field.
