They have a sophomore, I think her last name is Johnson, that could probably play for a D1 college right now.
Owsley County scrimmages Whitley County November 15 and Floyd Central November 23. Both games are away but I don’t know if they are part of a bigger group of games or single game.

Owsley County scrimmaged at Whitley County 11/15/22 and the score was cleared after each quarter but after playing 5 quarters Owsley won by 26. Owsley’s starting guard Laya Lynch didn’t make the trip due to the flu bug but the younger players stepped up and played well.
On another note, with the new route 30 from Booneville to London being completed it’s only a 35 minute trip to London and from there it’s an easy trip down 75 to Whitley. It used to seem like it was a long trip but not so much now. 65 miles and about an hour 10 minutes.

Pikeville & Sacred Heart played two halves. Reset the score at Halftime.
1st Half: Pikeville 29 Sacred Heart 29
2nd Half: Pikeville 27 Sacred Heart 18
Trinity Rowe hit 5 1st Qtr 3s to get PHS out to a hot start. Sacred Heart settled in & took control in the 2nd Qtr.
Pretty even 2nd half. Pikeville pulled away towards the end of the 4th.
Thank you to Coach Moir for bringing her team to Pikeville. Great opportunity for Coach Orem’s squad early in the season.

Owsley County played their second and final scrimmage of the preseason Wednesday. The game was at Floyd Central. The Lady Owls open their season at Hazard on Dec 2.
The Lady Owls controlled the first half of the 20 minute half setup (with running clock) and led 30-24 at halftime. But Floyd Central came back and won the second half and the game 53-47.
Owsley wore down the last 10 minutes of the game in the fast pace action. They only dressed 7 players from a roster of 12 due to the flu bug.
Both teams looked impressive. I will note that the 15th region allows for a physical brand of basketball and the body checking and aggressive play finally wore down the thin roster Lady Owls, who also had 2 starters, Lynch and Smith, just recovering from flu. I’m sure Floyd Central had some girls that’s been affected by flu as well, as it has been an issue in most schools the past month.
Owsley County will travel to Floyd Central for a regular season game on Jan 28.

Pretty good basketball matchups all day, and saw some great plays from several players. Bobby Spears era at Pike Central saw him get a close win over Knott Central and new coach Justin Amburgey. Kylie Gayheart returned to the Patriots after playing summer ball with Perry. Very young Betsy Layne team and first year coach Kory Thacker got up and down against Breathitt in a very good back and forth battle. Young Lady Cats played with a lot if hustle to get the win. Perry jumped out to a good lead on Paintsville before the Lady Tigers came back after big play of Emi Preece and timely buckets from Helton and Mulcahy. The player of the game for the Lady Commodores was Emmalee Neace who dropped a cool 30 including 7 threes. Jenna Hampton was a force for Morgan County along with Smith and Clinger. Impressive showing early by MC before the Lady Blackcats didnt lay down and was a fg away from getting the game to single digits. I was surprised to see Lawrence handle Leslie so easily. Dominated the game throughout. Not surprised that Lawrence won but to win by that margin was impressive. Not just a Kensley Feltner show either. Sophie Adkins and Kaison Ward had terrific games and Leandra Curnutte did a nice job running most of the PG duties during the contest. Feltner was still the most dominant player of the contest but she definitely has a group around her know to provide some added punch. Brooke Neal was on the bench and has not been cleared to return and if she can, Lawrence will make a strong case to dethrone Pikeville. Buckhorn held off East Ridge in a very low scoring affair. Nice to see that Buckhorn was able to field a team after their High School was destroyed by the flood this summer. The final game was Owsley vs FC and turned out to be a good one. Floyd Central trailed at the half before turning up defensive pressure in the second half and going up by as many as 12. Fatigue definitely set in for both clubs as Owsley only dressed 7 and FC only played 6 players despite having what appeared a full bench. Coach Smith has a ton of youth in the program and none better than Addison Terry and a 6’ post named Brown. FC had great games by Compton and Johnson and strong second halves by Harvel & Meade. The question for the Lady Owls and Lady Jags will be what reliable production will they get from the bench?

Owsley only played 6 players in the game, same as the Lady Jags played. One reserve who plays quite a bit and gives some added size to the interior is 5’9 forward/center Blakesley Whitaker and she was absent due to a Thanksgiving trip to Tennessee to visit relatives. The other factor that hurt the Lady Owls late in their game was all region guard jr Carly Smith and jr Layah Lynch are still recovering their strength and stamina from the flu, where they had to miss several days of school before the holiday break. And 6’2 eighth grader Macey Brown only returned to action about 2 weeks ago after missing a month of practice from a high ankle sprain. Smith in particular was only a shell of herself in this game. She has the capabilities of taking over a game.
Floyd Central plays an aggressive style of defense that includes “getting up into your grill” as an old saying coaches sometimes use. They do a lot of body checking and it’s fairly physical. And in games where refs don’t call it very tight, which this game was like that, that works in a teams favor. They had several steals and blocked shots that I personally felt will be whistled fouls when actual season begins. Scrimmages are usually a less strict whistle and this being the last game of the day I’m sure officials were tired too. But the officials were consistent with their officiating, which is what coaches and fans want.
I like both of these teams and feel they will be in the conversation as top tier teams in their respective regions.
I haven’t looked at Floyd’s roster but Owsley is a young team. They started and 8th grader, a freshman and three juniors in the game, and came off the bench with another 8th grader who played a lot of minutes at guard. And the missing player on Thanksgiving trip is a sophomore. The team also has 5 seventh graders who have had great seasons when they were in 6th and 7th grades in middle school basketball. The 7th grader most ready to give a few minutes to varsity play is Delaney Smith, a guard and the coaches’ daughter (as is Carly Smith, the jr starter.) Only one of the 7th graders made the trip, staying home to rest and get well. Hopefully this flu bug will run its course and soon be gone.
