Sean Penn wrote the screenplay and directed Into the Wild, a movie about a guy (Chris McCandlless) who graduates from college then takes off on a Visionquest journey, seeking the "marrow from the bone" kind of life and experience the open road and the wilderness can provide. The cinematography is awesome, and the story unfolds like a flower, revealing layer upon layer of meaning and resonance. Emile Hersche, a newcomer, gives a hanuting perferormance as Alxander SuperTramp, the moniker that McCandlless adpots as he travels. Vince Vaughn and Hal Holbrook make appearances and also contribute to the film's overall mood and texture. This movie challenges us, or angers us, or both...but it does not leave the audience unmoved. It is playing now at the Kentucky Theater, and I give it a big ol' "Worth Seeing" award.
