Tilghman took advantage of several McCracken Co. errors to hold on for a key morale boosting win. First PT victory for newly hired coach Sean Thompson, who came from Crittenden County.
Way to go Tornadoes
Yeah, they made several big 3rd down plays to either score or make huge gains, McCracken came from behind but couldn't score in the end.
Tilghman has some things to get squared away - like woeful special teams play - but showed some grit against a 6A team and PT deserved the win.
Nice win!
Sounded like PT was explosive but, needed lots of work on special teams. Passed up extra point kick after first 2 touchdowns and never stopped the Stangs short of the 35 on kickoffs. I was glad to hear them playing well but, they gotta have special teams to compete in 3a.
Tilghman was the better coached team last night. McCracken's offensive play calling is suspect, mostly due to the lack of in game adjustments. There were problems getting the play call in on time (appears to be indecisiveness). Two of those costing a timeout with one in the critical final minutes when they were needed for the defense. These issues aren't new, and probably won't improve. Defensively, it's no secret the secondary is not their strength. Playing no safety and leaving DBs on an island with much more athletic WRs is mind boggling.

Credit the PT line on both sides of the ball. They played much better than anticipated and were the key to the victory. QB played better than his completion pct, as there were many drops on good throws. Only one INT on a batted ball, but two other passes right in the defensive chest were dropped - so call that a wash. He came out and played solid from the start. WR (B. Thomas) was a stud with over 200 yds receiving on 5? receptions. RB (M. Rider) got most of his touches in the second half but still led the game in yardage by a significant amount (unofficially just under 100 yds). As expected, a tough runner that's hard to bring down. His size will fool those who haven't seen him play. I'll repeat others by saying special team play was dismal. PATs were an adventure, KR yardage allowed, fumble on KR. Punter had a couple good kicks though.

McCracken's bright spot was on special teams minus one bad punt and a failed 2 pt conversion. Probably had a chip shot FG early on but decision was to go for it on 4th down. The defensive front had a good game with multiple sacks and an INT, but poor tackling on occasion prevented several tackles for loss. The secondary gave up several big plays and a majority of the total yardage (half of that coming on 2 slants for long TDs). Coverage wasn't awful while being put in a scheme not conducive to their abilities. Dropped 2 gift INTs and had some tackling issues as well. Lack of speed will continue to be a problem. Surrendering 35 points was a major disappointment. On offense, the running game was absolutely terrible and the biggest factor for losing. Everyone looked slow to move and everything slow to develop. Failed to establish anything against a team that gave up nearly 200 rush yds per game last season. The passing game was better than adequate for week 1. The protection was good but need to clean up several low snaps. The QB played well, but inconsistent at times. WRs/TE had some really nice catches with several drops as well. QB and RBs didn't do well when attempting to connect. Low completion percentage (unofficially 18/43) can be shared by QB, WRs, and RBs.

Good win for Tilghman considering most had them as the underdog while coming off a subpar 2020 season. Can they continue to progress or will we see this play out as their best win like we've seen in the past? I still think they are a year away and not ready to put them in the 3A discussion. A top 10 finish looks very obtainable (can't argue against top 10 for this week). The Mayfield game will always be a major focal point but they need to avenge the two Union Co losses from last year and regain their district throne. Yes, Union Co still looks to be a challenge this season.

Bad look for McCracken Co and a very disappointing loss as a favorite against your crosstown rival. Might have been the last chance at bragging rights for the unseeable future. The Mustangs have recovered from opening losses in the past to have a good season but this time feels different. Can they right the ship? Or is this the beginning of what some are saying will be a huge drop off next year? A tough schedule ahead so no time for pause or they'll be looking at a 4-6 (possibly 3-7) regular season. 6A district 1 is beginning to look like a 4 team tossup.
History will show that McCracken is typically a slow starter and is often caught flat footed a bit for this game. History will show that this game can be a high point for PT's season while McCracken improves. The way is has gone: PT beats McCracken. McCracken beats Mayfield or plays them close. Mayfield then beats Tilghman easily.
Paducah Tilghmans pass protection was suspect, but their offensive line played better than advertised or their running backs really got to the outside quickly and were hard to bring down. McCracken play calling has been slow for 2-3 years for whatever reason. Ever once in awhile the QB needs to get under center which I think gives the running backs a better chance to hit a hole.
