Yes, I know this is the football forum.... but hear me out though.
With 64 basketball districts in 16 regions, most of the teams in your basketball district are in your home county or in a neighboring county.

My question is how often, if ever, do you play football games against the teams in your basketball district?

Johnson Central is in the 57th district with Paintsville, Magoffin County & Martin County.
The last time JC played each was....
Paintsville in 2008
Magoffin County in 2002.
Martin County/Sheldon Clark in 2010.

In doing some more research, JC has only played five teams from the 15th in the past 20 years.  The only team JC plays on a regular basis from the 15th region is Belfry.
Lawrence Co. in 2006.
Pike Co. Central in 1998.
Shelby Valley in 1996.
Prestonsburg in 1992.
Betsy Layne in 1989.
Pikeville in 1977.
Jenkins in 1974.
East Ridge, never.
Phelps, never.
Floyd Central, never. (Allen Central & South Floyd, never)
Piarist school, no team.

I know this opens up the discussion of "No competition", "schedules are full", "why would we play this game".... but with some teams not having a full schedule in 2020, you would think the teams from the same county would try to play each other just to get some field time.
That's a good observation, but the open discussions that refer to everything you mentioned I'm just not so sure how that would work even though it seems so simple. Then again playing time is better then no game at all..

This is a good visual, but my question was "how often, if ever, do you play football games against the teams in your basketball district."

Some teams may be in the same football class & the same basketball district... example, Ashland & Boyd County were in the same football district & the same basketball district.  Not only are they rivals, but they were district opponents.

Short of some teams being forced to play for district reasons in some sports, there are schools in the same county & basketball district that won't play each other in football like Hazard & Perry Co. Central and Johnson Central & Paintsville.
I’m a 13th region fan so the 49th district has Red Bird and Oneida which don’t have football. Clay and North Laurel would be beneficial, but Jackson County wouldn’t help either team. Sorry, but they have struggled for years and many teams have had kids injured because of no summer workouts.

Bell and Middlesboro would be good in the 52nd.

Barbourville doesn’t have football so Knox Central and Pineville could work. Different districts with Pineville and Bell, but could play being so close, but Knox and Bell class sizes much larger. A game is a game at this time.

Any combination of the 50th that aren’t already scheduled would be good.
Makes for interesting thought, Here in Mayfield local teams have come together figuring that playing is better than not. Fulton County calls up Mayfield and sets up a game. It is not an ideal matchup either way but at least they will play while under the covid restrictions.

Johnson not playing their neighbors seems odd to me. I am in Mayfield and we play the cross town team Graves County for bragging rights. We also play nearby Paducah Tilghman in what is the 2nd oldest game in the state, last night was the 107th meeting. In both Mayfield and Paducah the old timers tell the kids that it is not consider a successful season unless you win this game and to them its as important as winning the state title. Mayfield currently has won the last 15 games and TIlghman folks are still every bit as in to this game as ever. There are tons of events that are ancient traditions the week of the game and both towns paint the local store windows have bon fires, dinners with their foes, bike riders go get the game ball the morning of. Its a game steeped in tradition. We also play Murray who would be our other ancient natural rival. Murray is a 2A district foe and has no choice and actually dropped us for a time when we dropped to 1A but the game was so ancient that there was a lot of outcry from their older fans to renew it. It was hard to blame Murray who last beat Mayfield in 1997 and prior to that was in 1971.

That ancient tradition is what makes those games so special regardless of anything else and is something that Johnson, being a much newer school, cant have. This is true with a great many of the states rival games. The cross town game Mayfield has with its county foe Graves County might be a more similar situation to Johnson. Graves County is a newer school formed in the 1980's and is a much larger 5A school and they avoided playing Mayfield for many years until 1993 when they had a team that they felt would beat Mayfield so they played for the first time and beat Mayfield that year. The tables quickly turned and they have since played every year with Graves rarely ever winning but I think the difference in why it continues is that Mayfield is a small 2A ( formerly 1A until a few years ago) school and Graves is the large 5A school. The faithful constantly see and hear the talk of Mayfield football and it cuts deep knowing they are in the same community and several times larger. Johnson is a large newer school but they are in a region with no other similar sized schools and all the area small schools have a huge uphill battle to even compete and being smaller there is no local pressure to go through almost certain yearly defeat. That seems to me to be the reason no one wants to play Johnson. Johnson is a victim of their own success and being the large bully on the block it may likely never change unless Johnson football stops being on a different level. To find teams that can compete requires long travel that for other teams the return trip to play at Johnson is more costly VS playing closer. Okay I got carried away with this sorry for the overly long post

Johnson Central was established in 1968, with our first football season being in 1970. So the 2020 season is our 50th year of football.  We aren't the great-grandpa's of Kentucky high school football, but we're not new kids on the block either.

The only true, traditional rival JC has is Paintsville, only because we are in the same county and have so many deep family ties on both sides.  Neighbors & friends playing against neighbors & friends, family members playing against family members.... the list goes on and on.  Ashland & Belfry are on the very short list of rivals JC has.
McLean County plays Muhlenberg & Ohio County about every year in football.
