Barack Obama said today (8/21/07) that citizens of
the US with family members in Cuba should be able
to travel there to visit them. He also said that
without a "surge" in diplomatic talks with all the
players in the Middle East, the "surge" in troops
will not prove decisive in Iraq. To me, the whole
Cuba thing is from a bygone era. The communist/
democracy cold war is pretty much over. Fidel
Castro is a near dead has been, and his brother
seems ill suited for power. I think Obama is right:
we need to move relations with Cuba into the 21st
century. Also, I think he's right that it is going
to take a concentrated effort on the part of Iran,
Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and others to keep the
sectarian violence in Iraq from becoming a boiling
cauldron of ever escalating civilian deaths. To me,
Obama is speaking sense, while "experience" keeps cycling
through the same old failed policies.
