FALLSBURG — Fallsburg Elementary School sustained heavy smoke and heat damage as a result of a blaze that started in a first-floor classroom sometime Saturday.

Authorities said they were alerted to the fire when passers-by noticed the flames and called 911.

But Fallsburg Fire Chief Chris Jobe said he believes the fire was actually burning long before it was reported, because the entire building was damaged by smoke.

“It’s a large building, and the smoke had traveled throughout it from that classroom,” he said.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze in a relatively short period of time but were still on the scene keeping hot spots that could re-ignite the blaze under control as of press time.

The Fallsburg Volunteer Fire Department was assisted in fighting the fire by the Louisa and East Fork departments.
