STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The 17th-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team weathered a strong mid-game run by Penn State as the Wolverines secured their fourth straight win, 72-63, over the Nittany Lions on Wednesday night (Feb. 21) at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Wolverines led for 33:46 of the game, but Penn State strung together a 21-6 run from the final minutes of the first half through the first six minutes of the second half to take a brief lead. Michigan switched up its defense and made some key shots to regain the edge and pull away down the stretch.

Senior Duncan Robinson and freshman Jordan Poole provided crucial minutes off the bench in the first half, scoring 12 and eight points, respectively. Junior Moritz Wagner took over in the second half, scoring 12 of his 18 points. Robinson finished with 19 points and Poole had 13. Robinson and Poole combined for 32 of Michigan's 34 bench points, while Penn State got just six points from its bench.

Michigan trailed, 7-5, early in the first half when Robinson came off the bench and sparked the Maize and Blue offense. He started with a three-pointer at 14:09 which give U-M a one point lead, 8-7, and jump-started a 9-2 run. Robinson had seven of the nine points during the run and showed he could also take the ball to the rim and hit his mid-range pull-up jumper.

Robinson scored his ninth point of the half with a reverse layup at 7:50, before Wagner and Poole each hit triples to push Michigan's lead to seven, 24-17. Poole added a highlight dunk with 4:25 to go in the first half, as senior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman hit Poole in transition, and he stuffed it through while getting fouled. The subsequent free throw made it a three-point play. Robinson connected on his second three-pointer of the night to give U-M its largest lead of the half, 30-17, with 3:52 remaining.

Penn State's Lamar Stevens scored six of the last eight points of the half to cut the Wolverines' lead to eight, 34-26, at the halftime break.

The Nittany Lions carried that late first-half momentum into the second half as they started off on a 15-4 run and took a 41-38 lead at the 16:12 mark -- Penn State's first since the first six minutes of the game.

The Wolverines switched to a zone defense and stifled Penn State's offense. On the other end, Wagner helped Michigan swing the momentum back in the Wolverines' favor, when he hit a pair of threes to put U-M ahead, 44-43, with 12:04 to play. PSU tied the game at 46, with 10:39 to play, but Abdur-Rahkman responded with a key triple which gave Michigan the lead for good. A quick 7-0 Michigan run in less than a minute pushed U-M's lead to eight, 56-38, at the 6:39 mark.

A three-pointer from Penn State's Tony Carr with 2:55 left on the clock brought the Nittany Lions back within four, but a layup from Abdur-Rahkman and Robinson's third triple put the game out of reach.

The Maize and Blue went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the win and as a team shot a season-high 84 percent (16-for-19) from the charity stripe.
