An investigation into the disappearance of Roberta Snider.
A 72-year-old northeastern Ohio man who told police he handed his wife over to EMS workers after she died during a trip to Elvis Presleyâs Graceland now says he dumped her body in the Tennessee River on his way back to Ohio.
An investigation into the disappearance of Roberta Snider, 70, of Hartville, is ongoing and involves the western Tennessee Benton County Sheriffâs Office, according to a news release from the Hartville Police Department. Hartville is between Canton and Kent. A team is searching the area in Tennessee. No body has been recovered.
Snider has been missing since early January. Police have confirmed through receipts Philip Snider left for Memphis on Jan. 4. He told police Roberta Snider went with him. According to a report by Memphis NBC affiliate Action News 5, Philip Snider checked into a Days Inn across from Graceland on Jan. 5 around noon and checked out at 3:30 the next morning. A clerk at Days Inn told the station Philip Snider was asking about car washes near the hotel.
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher told WBBJ, a Tennessee TV station, Snider is âsaid to have wrapped her body in plastic and disposed of her bodyâ off a bridge over the Tennessee River.
Philip Sniderâs story has changed during the course of the investigation, which started Jan. 9.
Roberta Sniderâs brother reported her missing Jan. 9 after Philip Snider told family members she died and he left her ashes in Tennessee. Then he told police he wanted to take his wife to Presleyâs home called Graceland one more time before she died. He said Roberta died while they were in Memphis, and he saw an EMS-type vehicle in a parking lot and gave his wife to EMS workers.
But officials were unable to locate a body or find any record of her death.
Police searched the Sniderâs home on Abigail Street SW and found receipts from the trip. They also confirmed Philip Snider checked into a Days Inn in the Graceland area Jan. 5. Video and photo footage obtained, however, showed no record of Roberta Snider.
Following a second interview, Philip Snider told police his wife died from natural causes and that he threw her body off the Interstate 40 Tennessee River bridge Jan. 6.
Brian Heisler, Roberta Sniderâs brother who reported her missing, previously told The Canton Repository the family didnât suspect foul play and that he thought Philip Snider might be suffering from dementia. He could not be reached for comment Monday.
Court records show the Sniders married in 1964 and that neither has a history of criminal behavior.
Philip Snider has taken a polygraph test and been interviewed by the FBI, according to the news release. Police also have requested credit card and phone records and GPS data.
Anyone with information about the case, which remains categorized as a missing-person case, is asked to call 330-877-2630.
