Williamsburg, KY â The University of the Cumberlands men's basketball team overcame a 16 point deficit to force overtime and end 2017 with a 93-84 win over Stillman in the final game of the Cumberlands Classic Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 12-2 while the Tigers fall to 11-3.
"This team kept their composure and showed a lot of heart battling back," said Head Coach Donnie Butcher. "Everybody fought each possession and contributed to this win."
Kaashif English began the game hitting a field goal on the Patriots first possession. Stillman responded with eight unanswered points, including a pair of three pointers to take an 8-2 lead three minutes into the first half. UC cut the deficit to two before Dontaeveous Crawford converted five of the next seven Tigers points to give Stillman a 15-6 lead with 13:38 remaining. The Tigers used a 16-9 run, over the course of the next six minutes, to give Stillman their largest lead of the game at 31-15. The Patriots started to make a comeback as Travon Labranche and Chance Morton hit back-to-back buckets. After a Stillman free throw, Cumberlands went on an 8-5 run with five points from Will Gary to cut the deficit to 37-28 with 4:08 remaining. The Tigers extended their lead to 13 before UC netted eight straight points to close out the first half and cut the deficit to 43-38.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the second half as Malik Colvin-Seldon grabbed an offensive rebound, off a Samuel's shot, and put it home. Colvin-Seldon recorded UC's first eight points of the second half to cut the deficit to 47-46 with 16:24 remaining. Three minutes later, Morton converted from long range to even the score at 52-52. Montego Hoskins free throw put Stillman up by one, before Eric Duncan's field goal at the 12:09 mark gave Cumberlands its first lead since the opening passion at 54-53. After UC extended its lead to three, Daquan Forrest made one of his game-high eight three-pointers to give Stillman a 58-56 edge midway through the second half. The two teams traded buckets, before Colvin-Seldon made a steal and took it coast-to-coast for the lay up to put UC ahead 68-65. On the ensuing possession Colvin-Seldon second steal set up a Will Gary three-point play to give the Patriots a six point lead with 4:50 remaining. Stillman used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 73-73 with 2:47 left. The teams traded buckets, twice, while neither team scored in the final minute to send the game into overtime tied at 77-77.
In the extra time UC won the tip and on the ensuing possession English hit from behind-the-arc to put UC ahead 80-77. Monte Martin converted a field goal, before Cumberlands went on an 8-0 run to give the Patriots their largest lead of the game at 88-79 lead with 2:43. Down the stretch UC went 5-6 from the charity stripe for the 93-84 final.
Cumberlands out-rebounded Stillman 46-33, including 14-5 on the offensive end, in the win. UC also converted a season-high 30 free throws.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Colvin-Seldon, who tallied 26 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Gary added 19 points and a career-high seven boards, whiles English finished 13 points and eight rebounds. Samuel added 12 points, while Duncan finished with ten points and a team-high three steals.
The Patriots return to the court Saturday, January 6, when they host Life in their Mid-South Conference opener.
