Laurinburg, NC – After jumping out to a 21-0 lead, the UC Patriots would rely on a couple of big defensive stops on their way to a 21-14 win over the Knights of St. Andrews University on Saturday at Knights Field. After failing to convert on a fourth and four on the Knights' 28 yard line, the Patriot defense would allow one first down before stopping St. Andrews on their next four pass attempts, thwarting their opportunity to tie the game. The win moves the Patriots to 5-4 overall on the season and 2-3 in MSC Appalachian Division.

Both teams would move the ball in the first quarter, but a pair of turnovers by the Patriots along with a fumble and two punts by St. Andrews would take the game into the second quarter scoreless. After picking up two first downs on their next drive, UC would be forced to punt it away, but would pin the Knights back on their ten yard line. After holding SAU to a three-and-out, a botched punt attempt was kicked out of the back of the end zone for what looked to be a UC safety, but a penalty flag on the play was accepted by UC where they declined the points and got the ball on the SAU eight yard line with first and goal. There, Milton Shelton would be called on twice, scoring from two yards out on the second run to give UC the first lead of the game. The point after by Joe Rose was good, making it 7-0 UC.

The two teams would swap possessions with punts again before St. Andrews would punt it away a second time, this time giving the Patriots possession at the 30 yard line. UC would respond with a nine play drive covering 70 yards capped by a five yard TD run by Kevin Claussen to extend their lead. PAT by Rose was good, pushing the Patriots out to a 14-0 lead, which they took into half.

UC would begin the second half with the ball and would set a tone quickly, marching down the field on an eight play, 78 yard drive finished off by a 20 yard TD scamper by quarterback Josiah Robbins for another Patriot score. The Rose point after attempt was good, giving UC its largest lead of the game at 21-0 with just under 12 minutes to play in the third. St. Andrews would respond on their ensuing drive though as backup quarterback Kacey Otto would pull the ball on the option and take it 45 yards into the end zone for a Knights' touchdown. The PAT was good, cutting the lead to 21-7 UC. Both teams would then trade punts on possessions the rest of the third as the Patriots carried a 14 point led into the final quarter of play.

With just under ten minutes to play, UC would drive all the way down to the SAU two yard line, facing a fourth and one. The Knights would come up with the stop though, giving them the ball back at their two. St. Andrews would then use a nine play drive, including a 58 yard pass from Otto to Tyler Carr, capped off by a two yard run by Trevor McNeil into the end zone for a Knights' TD. The point after was good, making it 21-14 UC with just over six minutes to play.

On UC's next drive, they would pick up two first downs before being faced with a fourth and eight from the SAU 33 yard line. The Patriots would attempt to pick up the first, but Robbins' pass to Jalen Smith would be broken up and the Knights would get the ball back with three minutes to play. SAU would be held to three-and-out, but would go for it on fourth and one on their 42 yard line. A well-timed sack by Chanco Estes would get the Patriots the ball lack with 2:16 to play.

After being held to three-and-out, UC would go for it again, this time on fourth and four from the Knights' 28 yard line, but a sweep by Devonte Miles would come up a yard short, giving SAU one last shot with under a minute to play. The Patriot defense though would swarm as they would force four consecutive incomplete passes for a turnover on downs to earn the victory.

UC would finish the day with 400 yards of total offense after being penalized for 125 yards during the game. Josiah Robbins went 8-21 through the air for 115 yards with an interception. He added four carries for 36 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Milton Shelton would lead the way for UC in the rushing game with 19 carries for 96 yards and a score. Shon Jones added 40 yards on five carries. Kevin Claussen chipped in 29 yards on seven carries with a touchdown as well. Hunter Miniard had one catch for 43 yards while Jalen Smith caught three balls for 37 yards. Shon Jones added two grabs for 35 yards.

Robbie Garvin led the way defensively with eight tackles (four solo) with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Jay Woods added seven tackles with a half sack. Chanco Estes chipped in with six tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup. UC held SAU's triple option rushing attack to just 168 yards on the ground, well below their yearly average of over 200 yards per game. Full stats are available online.
