JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Eastern Kentucky suffered a 41-25 loss at No. 3 Jacksonville State on Saturday at Burgess-Snow Field.

The Gamecocks (5-1, 3-0 OVC) used a 66-yard kickoff return to start the game to score its first touchdown after a four-play drive that lasted 1:28. EKU answered with a drive to the JSU seven yard line, but an interception in the end zone ended the threat. Jacksonville State answered with a six-play, 80 yard drive that lasted just 2:21 and was capped by a 12-yard Rock Thomas touchdown run. The ensuing extra point made it 14-0.

The Colonels (1-5, 1-3 OVC) got on the board with a 30-yard field goal by Lucas Williams with 4:52 left in the second quarter. However with less than two minutes left in the second quarter, JSU capped a nine-play, 93-yard drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass and then returned an interception for 73 yards to pull away, 31-3, at the break.

Daryl McCleskey made a catch in stride along the right sideline and scored on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Tim Boyle with 4:23 left in the third quarter to make it a 34-10 game. A 1-yard touchdown run by Ethan Thomas with 10:39 remaining in the game moved the score to 41-17. Jason Lewis added a late fourth quarter 32-yard touchdown run and Austin Scott connected with Clayton Schmerber for the two-point conversion.

EKU turned the ball over four times in the game while Jax State did not give the ball away. JSU out-gained Eastern 184-57 on the ground and 346-252 overall offensively.

Boyle finished 16-for-26 for 186 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and two interceptions. Ryan Markush caught four passes for 60 yards. Lewis finished with a team-best 50 yards rushing to go along with his touchdown. Kobie Grace and a team-high nine tackles.

Bryant Horn led the Jacksonville State offense, finishing 10-of-17 for 158 yards passing and rushing for 73 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for two. Roc Thomas finished with 21 yards on four carries in one half of play.

The Colonels will be back at Roy Kidd Stadium next Saturday for a Homecoming game against Tennessee-Martin. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

NOTES
LJ Scott's second quarter 57-yard kickoff return was the longest by the Colonels this season. He also had a 48-yard kickoff return on Saturday.

Daryl McCleskey Jr. had a 55-yard kickoff return to start the third quarter. He also had a 40-yard kickoff return on Saturday.

Daryl McCleskey's 27-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was his first career touchdown catch.

The fourth quarter touchdown by junior Ethan Thomas was the seventh rushing score of his career.
