Wilford R. Shell, 61, of Middlesboro, was arrested Friday during the Appalachian Bowl high school football game between Clay County and Middlesboro high schools.
He was charged with fourth-degree assault with minor injury, according to court records.
Shell, who is a volunteer with the Middlesboro team, allegedly kicked a Clay County player in the groin, according to his arrest citation. According to Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson, the investigation is ongoing. Clay County won the home game in overtime, 30-29.
WYMT reported Shell was Middlesboroâs equipment manager.
Shell was booked into the Clay County Detention Center just before 10 p.m. and was released Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
