As thousands of people gathered in Christian County to watch the eclipse last month, state police say a fire chief and three volunteer firefighters took the opportunity to set fire to a vacant building.
Now the four have been charged with second-degree arson.
Fire Chief Jeremy P. Marlar, 27, of Crofton, and firemen Glen R. McGee, 23, Dakota S. Oglesby, 18, and Dylan M. Hodge, 18, are part of the Crofton Fire Department in Christian County.
State police said they set fire to a commercial building on Main Street on Aug. 20, the day before the eclipse.
âI donât believe it was related to the eclipse. It was more of an opportune time,â Trooper Sean Wint said Saturday.
Police are not releasing the motive for the arson. Wint said none of the men had an ownership interest in the building, which is next door to a dental office.
He said they were captured on video surveillance.
âThe building did sustain a lot of damage,â Wint said. âThey called in their own fire.â
The men were arrested Friday and taken to the Christian County Detention Center. In addition to the arson charge, Marlar and McGee are charged with first-degree official misconduct, and Oglesby is charged with third-degree burglary.
