Three former Louisville basketball recruits confirmed Katina Powell's claims to NCAA investigators in October and November, ESPN's 'Outside the Lines' reported Sunday morning in a tandem television segment and online story.
An anonymous source close to the investigation told ESPN that having three recruits on the record made the organization's investigation of U of L's hoops program a "slam dunk" case, and that it is "much worse" than academic fraud.
Louisville self-imposed a postseason ban in early February after private investigator Chuck Smrt found enough evidence of wrongdoing for U of L president James Ramsey to believe NCAA violations occurred.
"There's no question this stuff happened," a source told ESPN. "There's no question the people at the University of Louisville know this happened. Katina Powell is not an admirable person, but she told the truth."
The "Outside the Lines" television segment Sunday morning didn't break a ton of new ground in the story surrounding Katina Powell and Louisville's basketball program, though reporter John Barr and a cameraman did find the former U of L staffer at the center of Powell's allegations.
Andre McGee is an ex-player and director of basketball operations who Powell claims bankrolled stripper parties and "side deals," or sex, with players and recruits. McGee, the report said, gave each player or recruit in the room between $200-$500 at the parties.
McGee, now an Uber driver in Kansas City, Mo., told Barr, "My name will be cleared," before asking him and his cameraman to leave his car and speak to his lawyer, Scott C. Cox.
Multiple sources have told The Courier-Journal that the NCAA had not interviewed McGee at least as recently as February, and Barr said on "Outside the Lines" that he didn't believe McGee would, because he is no longer a coach and the NCAA cannot compel him to speak to investigators. McGee resigned from his job as an assistant at UMKC in October.
The NCAA interviewed Powell a second time last week, and she told ESPN that investigators seemed to be focusing in on the money involved and who helped McGee. In her book, "Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen," Powell refers to a character called "Coach Mike," allegedly a U of L assistant coach who spoke to her about arranging parties.
Powell told ESPN that she "got the strong impression" the NCAA may know who "Coach Mike" is, though Barr said Powell's lawyer, Larry Wilder, wasn't as strong in his words.
Powell also said current Louisville big man Mangok Mathiang, a redshirt junior whose picture is in Powell's book, did stop by one of the parties McGee allegedly held at the Minardi Hall dormitory on U of L's campus, but he didn't participate in the activities there and left after taking photos in the hallway with the women.
ESPN previously reported that coach Rick Pitino would be interviewed by NCAA investigators in April, though he and a U of L spokesman both said they weren't aware of a scheduled interview
