Alright boys and girls...things have been a little too quiet lately.

As we prepare for the 4A Championship game this Sunday Night, what are some of your favorite memories of Johnson Central Football? It can be from any year. I would love to hear from former players and those who have stood by this program through the good times and bad.

Go...
My Top 5 To Date, in no particular order.

The last :07 of the 2015 Scott playoff game.
The entire 2015 game vs. Wayne County.
The pass and 2 pt. Conversion to beat Ashland in 2012.
Getting to watch JJ Jude run all over the place for 4 years.
Truman Salyer's hit vs. Harrison County that shook the bleachers.
Mine will be made Sunday night!
Leslie beating Johnson Central on the last play of the game in 1995...Who knew that game would produce the 1st pick in an NFL Draft, A country artist with Album of the year, and a NAVY Seal...
Not to be negative but the 2008 Belfry vs JC game was a classic. For us it ended well.
I played football across the creek from Johnson Central in the late 70's and early 80's. I have many friends and relatives on both sides. My wife was a flag majorette for Johnson Central when I was a junior at Paintsville. We had an on and off dating relationship in high school. During The Apple Bowl of 1981 we were off. I snuck away from the team during half time and came up the bank just to see her for just a moment because we hadn't talked in a week. During the her marching bands performance she spotted me and found a way to flip me the bird without missing a beat with the band. I've been in love with her ever since. We just got married this Halloween weekend.
Man. This is a tough question.

I do have to agree with the above poster about the Leslie County game. We beat Tim Couch half to death - I think seven sacks and four INTs, including a pick-six - and still managed to lose on a last-minute play. Classic game though.

The 1993 Apple Bowl, starting the game off that nobody thought we would win with a fumble return for a TD and winning 56-12.

At Sheldon Clark, recovering the onside kick and taking it all the way down for a last-second win. (Probably not one of Coach Matney's favorite JC memories.)

2000: taking down Tates Creek on the road, and then Scott Salyer plowing his way across the goal line to finish our first undefeated regular season.

2006: the halfback pass to Tommy Taylor to win the playoff game against Ashland. And then the incredible atmosphere at the old Nest for the Covington Catholic semifinal. SRO, people lined up all around track, smoke and fireworks. Love the new stadiums and turf everywhere, but there's just something about the old stadiums.

The Drive of 2009: got this one on DVD. Ross Sanor to JK Hall in the corner of the end zone against Ashland.

The two point conversion against Ashland.

The last 0:07 of this year's Scott game (of course).

Seeing our crowd engulf the entire visitor side at Wayne County.

And of course, hopefully, my favorite memory ever gets made Sunday night.
Will be after the next game after a win

That's why I said "to date".

And congrats, by the way.

I think Teeny VanHoose's 1977 squad went 10-0.
My top 3 moments are:

1. The TD pass from Bryce Workman to Geordan Blanton to beat Scott.
2. 1974 Bryan Taylor's FG to beat Paintsville in the Apple Bowl.
3. Ross Sanor's TD pass to JK Hall to beat Ashland.

That include Belfry?
Regardless...we have memories. And stories. And I hope we keep making more.
No it couldn't include Belfry. JC's first win against Belfry was in 09 I believe. My favorite memory of JC will hopefully be them winning a much deserved state championship!
I think we didn't play Belfry in 1977 because of "the too high to judge field goal" game the year before.

Eagles lost the Apple Bowl that year to the Tigers. JC had a very good team that year but were not undefeated.

You may very well be right, but I was thinking that Teeny had an undefeated season whatever year that might have been..

Would you happen to remember the '76 teams record...That would have been Brian Taylor's senior season...
Favorite JCHS football Memories
  • 2005- JCHS returns to the playoffs under coach Matney after 8-2 season. Heartbreaking 35-28 lose to Madison Southern, but the program was revived
  • 2006- Revenging the lose from 2005s imfamous "wide right" game at putnam stadium not once, but twice at THE NEST. I will never forget the half back pass to beat ashland 28-21 in the second round
  • 2006- The atmosphere at the final four meeting with CovCath. one word ELECTRIC
  • 2008- Winning the final (hopefully not) Apple Bowl and winning the 5th straight against Paintsville
  • 2009- After a tough 0-4 start JCHS rallys and wins another district championship
  • 2010- Stands out more then any other memory "The Drop." Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda won state in'10
  • 2011- JJ Jude does what he did best, run, run, run. Around (woodford Co) over (Heath) and through (Everyone) finsishing an amazing and hisorical career
  • 2015- "the catch" against Scott will go down in JCHS history, maybe as the greatest play ever in its athletic history
  • 2015- The final whistle in Monticello signaling JCHS first trip to the State Finals
Diogenes Wrote:I think we didn't play Belfry in 1977 because of "the too high to judge field goal" game the year before.

Probably had more to do with the gunshots and the police escort to get out of Belfry than anything.
A couple I forgot....

2000 @ Boyd County: The Go-Ahead TD late in the 4th qtr., to go 10-0 and win the district for the first time in school history.

Walking out of the gates @ Greenup County in 2013 then hearing.... "That was a 60 yard field goal by Tyler Pack."

Making a statement in 2004 @ Paintsville with a 48-6 beat down that, IMO, ushered in the Matney era.

Getting our first win over Belfry in 2009.

Mr Vanhoose was one of top coaches in the area during that time as believe he came to JC from Boyd Co & they had some very competitive teams during his era. Can't remember their record in 76 maybe 9-1 or 8-2 but they didn't capture the apple barrel that year either.
And Brian Taylor was very good QB, come to think about it he was good in every sport he played & also a good guy.
Bob Seger Wrote:I think Teeny VanHoose's 1977 squad went 10-0.

Bob, the 77 team went 9-2, losing to Paintsville and Pikeville. They sat out the district that year and did not play Belfry or Russell.

Thank you OS...You wouldn't happen to remember the '76 record, would you?

Vanhoose coached at JC in 76 (6-4), 77 (9-2) and 78 (6-4 or 6-5).

I think it was 6-4.
Old School Wrote:I think it was 6-4.

Ok thanks OS...

Just want to specify that when I say the '76 team, I am referring to that as being the '77 graduating class.

The '76 graduating class would have been coached by Jerry Beatty, which I would refer to as being the '75 team.
We had our moments. But our time is now.
Losing to South Warren on Sunday, getting destroyed by Belfry this season, the dropped TD pass against Higlands when they had Patty Ice, this entire season of watching a terrible team, and not having to hear about this overrated team anymore after Sunday(not a moment but something that will last a lifetime) Smile
