EKU Football Nearing Top 10 in FCS Polls

Oct. 13, 2014 Football
RICHMOND, Ky. – Thanks to a furious rally over Eastern Illinois Saturday night, the Eastern Kentucky University football team kept its perfect record intact at 6-0. The Colonels are now ranked No. 12 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 13 in The Sports Network Media Poll.

The No. 12/13 ranking is the highest ranking for the Colonels (6-0, 3-0 OVC) since the end of the 2007 season. EKU was ranked No. 13 in the final media poll that year after falling to Richmond in the first round of the FCS playoffs.

Meanwhile, after a very exciting weekend of OVC football that featured three conference games decided by seven points or less, Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State are the lone OVC teams that still cling to an unblemished league record. Jacksonville State is currently ranked No. 6 in the media poll. The two teams meet in Richmond on Nov. 8.

A major reason for EKU's continued success this season is due to the squad's red zone defense. The Colonels rank fifth nationally in this category as the opposition has scored touchdowns just eight times on 21 trips inside the 20-yard line. This past weekend, Eastern Illinois reached the red zone eight times, but only scored three touchdowns and four field goals on those drives.

Eastern Kentucky travels to Tennessee Tech this Saturday, Oct. 18. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET.

Good to see EKU back at the top of the polls, it has been a long time.
What does the schedule look like for the rest of the season? Chances of going unbeaten in the regular season?

They still have home games against SEMO (who already has a win over then 3rd ranked Southeastern Louisiana), 6th ranked Jacksonville State, and Murray State. They have road games at Tennessee Tech, preseason Top 25 Tennessee State and they play at The Swamp against Florida in the final game of the regular season.

They could lose any of the last 6. Even if they run the table in the OVC I'd say there is little chance that they beat the Gators. Especially if they do run the table in the OVC. No way they play all of their starters for any length of time the week before the playoffs begin.

I'd love to see them run the table in the OVC--but it won't be easy.
