Ballard ran all over visiting archrival Eastern 53-13 Friday night in a Class 6-A, District Five high school football game. The

victory left head coach Mike Jackson feeling like his 3-4 Bruins are reborn.

"It's a big win because we're 1-0 (in district play)," said Jackson. "We schedule extremely tough, and we don't care what our record is before this point. It's hard for the kids to think that way, but tonight they came out here like we're 0-0."

The Bruins ran left. They ran right. They ran the Eagles (2-4) right off the field, rushing for 191 yards in the first half alone.

"What we're most pleased with is we haven't had much of a running game all year," said Jackson. "We've spent most of the past two weeks completely overhauling everything we do, and we added a lot of complex stuff. Our kids picked it up. Earlier in the year we were throwing it all over the field. Now we can have balance."

The Bruins struck first against the Eagles, marching 56 yards and cashing in on a 5-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Allen with 4:43 left in the first quarter. The Ballard defense held on the ensuing Eastern possession, but Jackson Bone of Eastern recovered a muffed punt on the Bruins' 38 and the Eagles were able to capitalize.

After two 14-yard completions, Jacob Biller found Zach Kozma from three yards out for a touchdown with 1:27 left in the quarter. The extra point bounced off the right upright and Ballard's lead was 7-6.

Ballard's special teams redeemed themselves on the following kickoff when Isaiah Collins faked a reverse and returned it to the Eastern 40-yard line. Two plays later Ballard quarterback Rex Wallace hit Sean Hammonds with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds still remaining in the first quarter.

The Bruins' defense held again, and again their offense marched down the field, opening the second quarter with a 70-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard touchdown run by David Daniels to make it 21-6 Bruins.

Eastern had one more answer, with Biller hitting Luke Moses with a 16-yard score to cut it to eight points, but it was all Ballard from that point on.

The Bruins got a 32-yard field goal from Rijad Kovacevic to extend the lead to 24-13 at halftime.

Ballard took its opening drive and pounded it in with a 4-yard touchdown run by Daniels. They even managed a two-point conversion after fumbling the snap on the point after attempt. Two possessions later Bennie Berry got into the scoring column with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Wallace to make it 39-13.

The Bruins got two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on a 21-yard pass from Wallace to Will Bush and the other on a 4-yard run by Berry for the final margin.

The Eagles were stopped on downs three times in the second half. They were outgained 249-85 in total offense in the first half.
