Well this past week did a lot to shake up things in 1a. This week will just help to solidify some of the rankings. There are some more great games on tap for this week. So here is the top ten games of 1a for this week:
1) Mayfield #1 @ 3a Paducah Tilghman #4 09-07-13
This has to be the number one game this week. You have a 1a
defending state champion playing a traditional 3a power house. This
is the 100th meeting of these two teams, which makes it one of the
longest rivalries in the nation. To add to that, take into account that
both of these teams have faced a common opponent in McCracken Co.
Both of the teams beat McCracken by the same margin, 1 point. To
add even more, Mayfield is currently riding a 7 game winning streak
against PT, which is the longest in the rivalry. Get your tickets early,
this one will be standing room only.
2) Fairview #6 @ 3a Lawrence Co #15
Fairview has attempted to beaf up their schedule, as was much needed,
this year. This is one of the teams they added. Fairview finished last
year as the state runners up at 14-1. Lawrence Co finished their year
in the second round of the 3a playoffs with a record of 5-7. Fairview
won their season opener and come into this game at 1-0. Lawrence
Co has opened this season with a mark of 2-0 and are feeling good
about their position right now.
3) 6a Dixie Heights #19 @ Beechwood #2
This is a regular game on these two teams schedules. Dixie is a big
6a school that is average in the classification. Dixie finished the last
season at 3-8 and lost the match up with Beechwood 33-28.
Beechwood got off to a shaky start last season but came on late and
finished in the 4th round of the playoffs at 9-5. Dixie has already got
off to a slow start at 0-1 this year. Beechwood started their season
much as they left off last year and are now 1-0.
4) Russellville #5 @ 2a Butler Co
Russellville Head Coach Jon Myers has pointed to this season for the
past 3 years. He has an experienced group this year and they expect
to make some noise and will challenge Mayfield. Russellville proved
this on Friday night by beating a very good 3a Fort Campbell 42-35.
Russellville enters this week with a mark of 2-0. Butler Co also has
gotten off to a good start and come into this one at 1-0.
5) Pikeville #7 @ Paintsville
Pikeville, wow, is making a statement early on this year. They come
into this one off a great offensive output that derailed the Hazard
Bulldogs. They come into this game with a mark of 2-0 and seem to
be the front runner in the eastern side of the state. Paintsville would
like to derail Pikeville and dash their hopes in this game. Paintsville
appears to be on track this year and come into this one with a mark
of 2-0 as well. Paintsville would certainly like to make this one a
much closer game after loosing to Pikeville 63-24 last year.
6) 2a Walton-Verona #13 @ Ky Country Day #9
These two teams appear to be a mirror image of one another as far
as their records go. Last year 2a Walton-Verona went 10-3. This
year they are currently 2-0. Last year KCD went 11-2. This year they
too are 2-0. This could be one heck of a game. The KCD fans won't
even have to break out their private jets to fly, since this one is at
home.
7) 2a Green Co #19 @ Frankfort #4
Both of these teams find themselves in somewhat of a similar situation
here. They both desperately want to earn some respect. Green Co
wants to earn some respect from Frankfort, to whom they lost 34-20
last year, and the rest of the state in 2a. Frankfort just wants to earn
some respect from the state in 1a. Green Co finished 2012 with a
record of 6-5. Frankfort finished 2012 in the 3rd round at Beechwood,
with a record of 11-3.
8) Raceland #8 @ 4a Boyd Co
Raceland is another one of those teams that has really attempted to
beef up their schedule and this was supposed to be one of those
games. While Boyd Co is a 4a school they come into this one with
a record of 0-2 and this is why this one ranks in the bottom half here.
Boyd Co finished last season with a mark of 5-6. Raceland comes
into this one off a disappointing 1 point OT loss. They enter with a
1-1 and finished 2012 at 9-3.
9) Bellevue #12 @ 2a Gallatin Co
Both of these teams come into this one attempting to claw their way
into the top ten of their perspective classifications. They finished
last season with similar marks. Bellevue finished at 7-5. Gallatin
finished at 6-5. Both enter this one with a mark of 1-1. This is a
respect game as well. It is a little more about respect for Bellevue,
as they lost this one last year 52-16.
10) 3a Pike Co Central #19 @ Williamsburg #11
Williamsburg is another one of those schools that says they are
trying to improve their schedule. This is one of the games they will
point to. Pike Co finished 2012 with a mark of 8-4, but come into
this one with a mark of 0-1. Williamsburg finished 2012 with a mark
of 11-2 and considers themselves to be one of the elite in 1a. I
cannot tell you what their mark will be when they come into this one,
due to mother nature. The Jackets will play later today against
another team they added to beef up their schedule. There appears
to be some health issues for the Jackets as well. They are more
concerned about possible fatigue issues in this one.
*****Bear in mind that the rankings listed are from the preseason polls, as
I still have not seen any new ones.*****
