Lexington police are looking for a man who they say impersonated a firefighter, bound a woman and tried to rob her at her home on Kittiwake Drive this morning.

According to police Lt. Thomas Curtsinger:

The man, dressed in firefighter gear, knocked on the door of 3813 Kittiwake Drive early today and told the woman he was looking for the source of a gas leak.

After she let him in, he showed a handgun and tied her up. He searched the house for money.

Two teenagers in the house remained asleep and unaware of the incident.

The man later ordered the woman into her vehicle and had her drive to Members Heritage Credit Union on Custer Drive. He intended to have her withdraw money after the credit union opened.

At some point he was distracted, and she unlocked her door and escaped from the vehicle. She got help from an employee who was arriving to open the bank.

Police were called at 7:50 a.m.

The suspect fled in the vehicle but abandoned it at the end of Custer Drive.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call (859) 258-3600.
