Consolation games often can be a drag, but the Madison Central High School boys' basketball team had plenty of incentive against Bullitt East on Sunday.

Bullitt East had defeated Madison Central 72-66 on Dec. 15 in the Thorntons Showdown at Valley, and Indians coach Allen Feldhaus Jr. said his team wanted some revenge in the rematch.

Dominique Hawkins helped Madison Central get it, posting 28 points, seven rebounds and five steals in a 64-58 win over Bullitt East in the third-place game of the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

"It tells you a little bit about your team when you get in those consolation games," Feldhaus said. "Nobody really looks forward to playing in those things, but I think our kids looked forward to playing because of what happened last Saturday. They came out and competed."

Quan Taylor added 17 points and seven rebounds as Madison Central -- No. 4 in The Courier-Journal's preseason poll of coaches -- improved to 9-3.

Rusty Troutman (18 points, 12 rebounds), Derek Willis (14 points, six rebounds, six assists, three blocks) and Elliott Young (11 points, five rebounds) led No. 2 Bullitt East (9-2).

Chargers coach Troy Barr said his team did not match Madison Central's intensity.

"Didn't want to be here and didn't really care about winning, it seemed to me," Barr said. "We didn't have a lot of enthusiasm about trying to get the win."

Troutman's basket tied the score at 46 with 7:43 remaining, but Taylor had two baskets and Ken-Jah Bosley had another during a 6-0 run that gave the Indians a 52-46 edge with 6:26 left.

The Chargers pulled within one point twice, the last time coming on Troutman's two free throws that made it 54-53. But Hawkins nailed a 3-pointer and Bosley sank two free throws for a 59-53 lead with 1:36 left.

It was another outstanding performance for Hawkins, who averaged 28.8 points over his four KOB contests. The 6-foot-1 senior has scholarship offers from Western Kentucky, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech, but plans to wait until the spring to make a commitment.

"He's just incredible," Feldhaus said. "Hopefully the word will get out. I don't know what else he can do to prove to people he can play."
