Butler closed with an 18-5 run to upset host Manual 59-53 on Friday in the semifinals of the Queen of the Bluegrass girls' basketball tournament.

Senior Aereon Smith led the Bearettes (6-3) with 28 points and grabbed five rebounds, while junior Danielle Lawrence had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Alexis Stallard had five steals and three points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:09 remaining.

"We had a tough stretch of games to start the year," said Butler coach Larry Just, whose team will play Ballard in today's final. "This past week we tried to get this group to stay together and restart things. We had some girls step up and make plays when they had to make plays today. Obviously, it's a great win for us at this point in time. I couldn't be more proud of them."

It was Smith who answered Manual senior Kayla Styles (17 points) in the first quarter, outscoring her 8-6 to keep the Bearettes within two at 16-14 after eight minutes.

"Aereon throws the ball in for us, she brings the ball up the floor, she scores, she rebounds. ... We ask her to do a lot, and I don't think she gets credit for all that she does out there," Just said. "She did a great job again today."

Manual (6-2) led 28-25 at halftime. After the Lady Crimsons built the margin to 35-27, Smith hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to help pull Butler within one. When Manual extended its lead to 42-37, Smith answered again. Twice in the fourth period the Lady Crimsons led by seven. Twice it was Smith who responded with a bucket.

After Styles hit a free throw to make it 53-49 Manual, the Bearettes applied the defensive clamps the rest of the way, outscoring the Lady Crimsons 10-0 to close the game.

Senior Destony Curry added 13 points for Manual, and sophomore Aricka Prentice had 11.
