Despite starkly contrasting overall records, the state-ranked Simon Kenton Pioneers entered play Friday night on equal footing in the district standings with struggling Boone County and sought to put some distance between themselves and the visiting Rebels.
Playing on Senior Night in the regular-season home finale, Simon Kenton accomplished the one thing it needed to ensure at least one more home game, during the postseason, with a critical 38-20 district win over Boone County.
“We definitely wanted to send our seniors out at home on the right note,” Pioneers junior quarterback Brennan Kuntz said. “This was a great win for them.”

Kuntz keyed the Pioneers’ offense, directing four scoring drives and finishing 12-of-24 passing for 275 yards with three touchdowns, including a 95-yard bomb to Grant Wassom, during a 24-point fourth quarter for Simon Kenton (7-1 overall, 2-1 district). Kuntz ran for 54, for a total of 329.
Andrew Sampson led the Pioneers with 60 rushing yards on 14 carries, including his 10th rushing touchdown of the season on a one-yard first-quarter run. Kuntz’s TD pass to Wassom (3 catches for 122 yards) came three plays after Boone failed to get in the end zone on a fourth-and-inches try with nine minutes remaining in the game and the score tied at 14.
“Definitely the biggest plays of the game,” Pioneers coach Jeff Marksberry said of the goal-line stand and subsequent 95-yard score. “The pass (to Wassom) is our biggest play of the year, and we needed to get it out of there.”
Kuntz also had a 35-yard third-quarter touchdown pass to Sampson and a 34-yard TD toss to Luke Stone in the fourth as the Pioneers outgained the Rebels 406 yards to 222.
Boone County shook up its offense by starting receiver Jeremiah Williams at quarterback. He led the Rebels on a game-opening scoring drive, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown strike to Thad Moss, but was knocked out of the game with a hard sideline hit early in the second quarter.
Williams did not return after totaling 74 of Boone’s 92 first-half yards. Aaron Floyd scored two TDs for the Rebels, on a 64-yard fumble return and a 27-yard pass.
“When Jeremiah got hurt, it also hurt us in the secondary,” said coach Rick Thompson, whose Rebels held Kuntz to 57 passing yards before the break. The Pioneers, sixth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll and ninth in the Associated Press Class 6A statewide rankings, improved to 7-1 while getting back on the winning track after last week’s one-point loss at home to rival Campbell County.
“We needed to get a win tonight,” Kuntz said. “It was a big game.”
Boone County, 1-7 overall, fell to 1-2 in the district while losing the head-to-head tie-breaker with the Pioneers. The Rebels, a winner over Dixie Heights and a loser to Ryle, finish the district schedule against Campbell County following next week’s bye. Simon Kenton can clinch a 3-1 district record in the finale on Friday at Dixie Heights.
The Pioneers close the regular schedule Oct. 26 at Scott County. They are looking for deep playoff advancement one year after finishing 2-9. Simon Kenton was a state finalist in 2008 and a regional finalist in 2009-10.

Boone back to their old ways, they canceled the JV game for Saturday morning at the end of the varsity game because the grass was wet at Boone Co High.

^ It rained more in Alexandria than in Florence, Camels JV played and with the bit of sun yesterday morning, the field was in good shape. That's a SHAME that both teams non-varsity players got screwed out of a week of football!
